So it looks like the big news is that Diageo's Walsh is the top candidate to replace the ailing board chairman, and that the board will be considering who will replace Bernie.

Formula One teams will this week be consulted on who will become the new chairman of their sport, as the current incumbent is stepping down to battle a long-running illness.

In the long term the new chairman will lead the committee which decides who replaces Bernie Ecclestone, when he decides to stand down, however, he does not represent a threat to the F1 chief executive. There is no sign that Ecclestone is slowing down but he turned 84 this year so will eventually have to let go of the wheel and the new chairman will have a say in who replaces him.

Formula One’s teams have been given the right to be consulted over the replacement for the chairman of the series according to the contracts which commit them to race.

The news was revealed in Britain’s Independent newspaper today and it is particularly relevant as F1’s current chairman, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, is stepping down.

The Independent also disclosed that the new chairman will be lead a team of people who decides on the replacement for F1’s 84 year-old chief executive Bernie Ecclestone when he eventually gives up the wheel.
