Here is Renault's concept of what F1 could be like in 10 years time:

It looks pretty nice to me.

Those front wings look positively retro compared to what we have today. Where are the 4,827 winglets and tuning vanes?

The high nose doesn't seem likely for the same safety reasons that they keep noses low nowadays.

I like the simple wings. I assume that would be the result of rules keeping wings small and simple (which should be the case now)

Looks kind of like how I'd expect a futuristic Formula E car to look adapted for F1.

Hmm, not enough surface area for stickers.

It looks like it was designed by an artist and not an aerodynamicist/engineer. The cars look the way they do out of an evolution of practical solutions from engineers and aerodynamicists, which is why the cars will never look like the above, especially not as "10 years in the future" concepts always look terribly dated when we reach 10 years in the future.

Do you have any examples of futuristic concepts where the date has passed? Eg if someone in 1995 designed what they thought cars might look like in 2015?

Having seen the concept car in the flesh at Silverstone, you’ve got to say that it really doesn’t look all that much out of place.

The design retains a relatively current look yet reflects how rules may be shaped in the future thanks to its closed cockpit and retractable rear wing. The feeling to the purist that F1 should always remain an open wheel formula is also curiously removed and thus negates the divisive halo debate.

Whether or not such a vision would ever come to fruition in the same way is rather a moot point but from an aesthetics point of view then it’s got to be worth consideration when such matters come up for discussion.

That is why, even with a closed-cockpit design, drivers would race in a transparent cockpit with a transparent helmet so fans can observe them in action.

Transparent helmets? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's not like the driver would look normal since it would still have to fit tightly to do its job so cheeks and ears would be all smushed up. And would be pointless anyway unless there was also a transparent fireproof hood to go with it.

Would Alonso, Massa & Raikkonen still be sticking around?

If they are they better hope they've not succumb to the dreaded middle aged spread as that cockpit looks rather cosy even by F1 standards.
