Hello everyone,

If unforseen world events cause a F1 season to be cancelled, how will the Champion be declared?

What regulations and protocols exist currently that can be used to make a decision?

Thanks.

you would presume that the championships would be declared at the point the championship was cancelled

I'd maybe suggest if the global event was big enough to force the FIA to cancel the remainder of the series then the last thing on peoples minds would be how the championship will be decided but I suppose if it was then i'd agree with wire2004.

If an F1 season is cancelled, there will be no champion because its cancelled.

I guess the only precedent, and it would be pre F1, would be the WW2 era where there were no champions because there was no top level Grand Prix racing.

I've pondered before, if that freight plane that has all the cars on ever went down it would probably mean the cancellation of the remainder of the season. If its more than half way through I guess they would just declare the result as it was.

Great, now this forum is going to wind up on some sort of watchlist, just as I was starting to find my voice.

It would depend on when the event occurred;

Mid-season, it would go to the leader at that point in time.
Pre-season, it would be null, because there's no championship that year. The year would just have an (*) next to it because it didn't happen.

But that is curtailed or reduced, cut short or what ever. Cancelled, means does not happen, so no champion.

(yeh, I got my nit picking head on :twisted: Sorry)

To answer the OP's question - according to the Sporting Regulations, so long as 8 races have been contended, then whatever the results are at that moment in time, will be the result.

So for this season, Hamilton would be WDC.
