It certainly is not a cost savings. But manufacturers like Merc like the 3 engine rule as they know they have the team and expertise to make a success of it, and the R&D will add value to their road division as a whole in the long term.

It seems Ferrari are in the same camp as well. Wasn't it Ferrari and Merc that rejected Horner's push to try and get the engine limit kept at 4?
