Ferrari has been slow on fridays before but they usually unlock their pace on Saturdays.
With that said Merc is so far ahead at the moment its hard to imagine others catching them. But I dont think the gap will be as big in qualifying.

Interesting...
Both Ferraris have put on the supersofts to set their quickest time of the day so far but they are still all-but a second shy of the Mercedes.

Yes very concerning for Ferrari. 8O

yeah I'd agree. It's always so hard to judge thins from Friday mornings.

Of course, if it stays like this then this will all but confirm that Mercedes once again have produced a superb car, but let down this year by their inability to get the tyres working properly

I'm fed up with the lack of info on the screen all the time, especially with regards tyres. Now it said RoGro set that time on Softs and thry were saying Stoff was basically matching Alonso's time on mediums?

Is that true because that would look good for McLaren rather than RoGro beating their time on a harder tyre.

Alonso is now just two tenths down on Max Verstappen in the still-running Red Bull, although the Dutchman's best time was set on the medium tyres compared to Alonso's soft best.
Alonso then has to back out at Turn Four after perhaps being caught out by a gust of wind.

Encouraging times for Alonso & McLaren. If they can maintain this competitiveness against the Red Bulls then I'll guess they'll be ecstatic, regardless of what Ferrari or Mercedes do

Chequered flag. Max is 3rd, a tenth off Hamilton and 1s off Bottas, which suggests the Ferraris at least aren't showing their full hand yet. Can't wait for FP2

edit: sorry, Vettel just nipped on in as I was typing that, a tenth up on Max. Still think they likely have more in hand though

This session is completely a mirage. A lot of them trying the new parts with heavy fuel loads.

I know a little now after plying F1 2017 game's career mode!

Looks like RoGro was on Softs so McLaren look not bad at all. Stoff nearly matched that time on Mediums so there's more to come from them as well. Still 9ths behind Max on the same tyre but it was over 1.8 before so interesting to see what happens next.

Plenty to come from everyone I think. Mercedes were doing lower fuel runs apparently. Someone on another site said Wolff and Bottas said so.

yeah I'd hope McLaren can take some encouragement from this, although it's all but impossible to tell for sure in FP1. They certainly look better than Renault, though and as you say not too bad an effort from the fact they are essentially giving a shake-down on an almost all-new car

"Thankfully the damage is pretty light," Christian Horner says of Daniel Ricciardo's car.
"Thankfully it was the old front wing so he's a lucky boy.
"He will be in the right specification for the next session."

Wow, Ferrari have churned through those Supersofts in this session. Mercedes looking very confident and Hamilton's gap to Bottas maybe at least partially explained by the tyre difference. Max quite impressive on the Mediums

Blocked Leclerc this time. Didn't move off racing line while clearly going slower

edit: ending in a near-miss apparently

12:32 A replay shows what upset Leclerc - a near-miss with Magnussen on the pits straight where the Haas appears to move across as the Sauber tries to pull alongside.

McLaren earned best of the rest honours as it debuted a striking new nose and updated bargeboards, with Fernando Alonso 1.7s off the pace.

no mention of the new floor, which I thought was coming this weekend, too. Does anyone know whether the above is all there is or whether the reporter just got a bit lazy?

Magnussen has been summoned to the stewards over that incident:

I won't be surprised if Steiner defended him!

He did his usual thing of impeding drivers in practice, this time Leclerc, if that wasn't enough when Leclerc then tried to pass him at the end of the straight KMag then moved across him in the braking zone.

I saw pics of the new diffuser but I haven't seen any good pics of the floor yet so I dunno if it's on tbh.

Wonder when will Magnussen get a ban. Again he was close to creating a big accident:

Interesting article below which states that the bargeboards are actually unchanged:

No mention of the floor, either, so I'm guessing that's unchanged currently while they evaluate what impact the new nose has had?

Already 1 second up on pole last year, although it was re-surfaced. Does anybody know how Bottas’ time compares to the best in testing and what tyres were used for each?

Ferrari usually are full of sandbags on friday but that gap seems very high even factoring that in.

Just ignore any times from FP1. Just ignore it. We saw what happened in last few races. Ferrari seems to have taken hints from Mercedes but gone to even more extreme this season after first race. They dont seem to run anywhere close to full power in any of the FP sessions anymore. Either they are too confident about their ability to simply flick the switch and turn it up in qualifying or they are worried about component life and not stressing it at all in FP sessions.
Either way, I really do think we will be going in 1:16s this year or at worse low 1:17s. Wont be surprised if we go even quicker.

We are nowhere near the real pace of these cars yet.

I wrote that right at the beginning of testing, before the Mercs had set a time, which would make Bottas's best laps more than 3s faster than the best FP1 times last year. Not sure about best time overall, though

I'm not sure that's correct that article as the bargeboards near the front are a little different. And as I type Sky say Stoff's getting a new floor put on now, lol.

Also on the bargeboards I think the Kimoa sign one is a little different but I haven't seen a comparison.

"There are some issues around the Ferrari mirrors which the FIA are not happy with," Ted reports.
"I can see what the concern is. By putting these mirrors where they are, and particularly this little guide vein that goes above them and then suspends the mirror. It's so obviously an aerodynamic device that it starts to get into the position where it's not a mirror at all.
"I think there are some more rules in terms of what you're allowed to keep the mirror secured by. The suggestion is this may be looked at again by the FIA."
Charlie Whiting was taking photographs of the mirrors in question on the Ferrari yesterday and Jo Bauer, the FIA's technical delegate, is down at the Ferrari garage currently having another look

http://www.skysports.com/f1/live-blog

I don't really see the issue. So what if they offer aerodynamic benefit? Surely the FIA must have anticipated this when allowing them to be affixed to the halo?

Stof is quicker than Alonso, unusually. We know he had the new floor but wonder if Alonso hasn't as yet?
