It only took just 1 lap, and holding a late rally for Scott Dixon as he joins AJ Foyt as a 5-time Indy Car series champion. But the race belongs to Ryan Hunter-Reay after going flag to flag to earn his win at the Grand Prix of Sonoma in the Indy Car's season finale. The quest for Alexander Rossi's 1st championship were cracked right on the start before the 1st turn when Rossi nudged the back of Marco Andretti's car damaging the front wing and rupturing his right front tire and had to get service. Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan Racing season came to an abrupt end when Portland's winner Takuma Sato blew his engine on lap 15. 2 laps later, Josef Newgarden's hopes for a championship repeat halted when he stalled on pitlane for service. Rossi's hopes came back for just 1 caution period when the 2nd RLLR car of Graham Rahal lost power on turn 5 on lap 44 just as Rossi pitted for service. On the restart, a traffic jam ensued enabling Rossi to go by after Carlos Munoz spun on lap 49 who is subbing for Robert Wickens in the #6 car. But it was all Hunter-Reay and Dixon withstanding Rossi's rally. Will Power came for the final poduim spot. Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti sealed the top 5. Sebastian Bourdais came home in 6th with Rossi just wiggling to 7th after running out of fuel. Newgarden crossed the line in 8th. 2018 Indy Lights Champion Pato O'Ward scores his maiden top-10 finish in 9th followed by Ed Jones rounding up the top 10.

Also giving credit is Santino Ferrucci with an 11th place finish.

This year, Indy Car will visit the Circuit of the Americas for their final test in the Formula 1 configurated track. Rossi is a driver that Formula 1 needs: A driver who can pass cars.

In a lighter note: Robert Wickens has spoken via twitter as he sent his message to his fellow Indy Car drivers.

Happy for Dixon (who is generally my favorite driver) to take a well-earned 5th, but it's too bad Rossi had that first lap contact and we were robbed of seeing a proper fight between them for the title. Rossi seemed to have great pace in the race, but he just couldn't overcome all that lost time and track position.

Also massively impressed with O'Ward on debut - this kid looks like the real deal, and I imagine it won't be long before one of the teams snaps him up.

PICK 10 COMPETITION (4 wins, 15 podiums): 3rd in 2016
TOP THREE CHAMPIONSHIP (No Limit Excedrin Racing): Champions in 2015 & 2018 | 2nd in 2017
AUTOSPORT GP PREDICTOR: 2017 USA & P-F1 Champion | #2 in the world in 2017
