ok, i know they are Alfa Romeo, but that will take some time.

so far they look like the only team with something a bit radical. a different front wing

Ferrari's front wing is somewhat similar conceptually (though not nearly as all-in on the concept).

I'm not particularly interested in front wing design - other than to make the racing better. The FIA seems to have made a half-heated attempt to get a 'better racing' result. The 2019 wings are very similar to the 2018 wings, so likely to function similarly.

i had not noticed the ferrari had a bit different wing. i'm not excited about front wings either, but it seems to be about the only surprise i noticed on any of these cars.

If the front wing generally integrates heavily with the rest of the design ( as Mclaren claimed to be the case with their fw last year ), then it might be a significant thing. The others will need quite some time to come with their solution.

If it doesn't and the design works, it will be copied by the rest.

In the second situation, it makes me wonder why would one not wait until Barcelona to show it.

Teams often only present their cars with basic front wings on them so as to keep their new designs hidden for a long as possible. The Alfa was having a shakedown and probably put something on that was good enough for that job. Best wait until Monday to see what they run.

It was never about the downforce with the front wings. It was always about managing the airflow. Most of the downforce is generated by the elements closer to the nose cone. And with this new concept the teams are least bothered about that part as they are all getting majority of that downforce even while using simple elements like this year. But the wings are working very differently now. With the lack of complex veins and elements and digits and winglets, we are seeing various concepts to get the airflow go around the tyres and not over the tyres causing turbulant air going to the cocke bottle and rear wing of the car.

So conceptually and design wise, these are very different wings now. What Saub.......err Alfa Romeo has done is very interesting indeed. They realised that they dont need full wing elements to get the downforce and left that part open to use endplate to divert the air under and around the tyre instead. I am guessing we will probably see at least couple of other teams experiment with this in the future.
