Verstappen is likely to get an engine change which would make him start from the back of the grid. Probably a strategic penalty to have a fresh engine for Singapore where Red Bull could arguably be the strongest car.

I’d heard that Max would take a new engine in Russia, with Honda wanting the fresh unit and no penalty for Japan. The thinking being that the Spec 3 would still get the job done in Singapore, but perhaps Red Bull and Honda won’t be completely aligned on that one.

If they go that route though, my bold prediction in the other thread for Albon’s first race win in Singapore gets a boost (I know some may not consider this prediction particularly bold).

I think I heard this weekend that Verstappen will take the new engine in Monza. Basically they were splitting Verstappen and Albon so both didn't change engine at the same race.

They are introducing Spec 4, but interestingly they didn't use Spec 4 in Belgium - both used Spec 2, an older less powerful unit. I suspect they won't run Spec 4 in Monza either, probably Spec 3, and save Spec 4 for the races they think they can win at - ie Singapore and Mexico, and probably Suzuka as well. Maybe they'll introduce Spec 5 at Russia too, for Max, because obviously winning at Suzuka would be great for Honda.

Verstappen & Gasly will get the Spec 4 engine at Monza. Hence, they both will start from the back of the grid.

Why would I do that?

Interesting to see so many team mates with differing tyre selections for this race.

Makes sense for Red Bull to be taking the penalties at Ferrari circuits, bet they wish they did Alex and Max’s the other way around though!

I’ll mix the predictions up a bit and say Hamilton splits the Ferraris in quali.

What are the allowances? I thought it was 3 of each but I don’t recall that many penalties.

Wet, second red flag. Wet tyres won't warm up as they are too hard. Or 'useless' according to Max. Croft talking complete ******** as usual. But track drying as rain stops.

So because of complaints of engine penalties it's being put forward that these will be only taken after the end of the race were both drivers and teams will take both WDC and WCC points penalties, I just have to shake my head at the proposals being put forward by Ross Brawn and I've no confidence in the sporting direction he is taking F1, reverse grid races to set the race for Sunday is also on the agenda as soon as next season.

FIA bloke 1: "People dont like that qualifying can feel pointless because penalties will change it all afterward anyway, how do we fix it?"

FIA bloke 2: "well why dont we do exactly that still except now we do it for the race itself"

FIA bloke 1: "Genius, I cant imagine anyone complaining about that"

So just a pointless piece of info here.

After the F2 events of last week, our local F1 broadcaster, in it's infinite wisdom, decided that after FP1 they would show a 1 hr highlights package of....................... wait for it

The 1994 San Marino GP.

My prediction for the race is it will be checkers or wreckers for Sebastian. If he is not leading the race, Seb will have one of his melt-downs trying to get to the lead. He knows that this is by far the best chance for a win this year and he will throw caution to the wind to get there.

Looking forward to seeing how Albon does against Max. 3 tenths off at the moment after a weekends worth of practice (practise? i can never remember) isn't looking too bad for him at the moment.

If they were to go to reverse grids, then poker you would not have me to question you any more. I would walk away from F1. Gawd, I hate that idea.

Ross Brawn mentioned show casing it in 4 races next year, a Saturday reversed grid sprint race to set the grid for the race on Sunday.

So that sounds like no qualifying what most people love, and I guess who ever leads the WDC starts last in the Saturday sprint race?

Don't know whats changed since March then.

Brawn, "I don't think reverse grids would be at the right level for F1. It works in other formulae, we know that from our own experience.

"But there are different requirements in F2 than F1. We're definitely not into gimmicks, we're into nurturing and developing the racing, and understanding what the fans enjoy, and seeing how we can give them more of what they enjoy with integrity.

"We don't want it to be gimmicky. Because I think that will turn fans off."

Agreed Blake, If the W series is anything to go by Megan Gilkes who has 0 championship points. Ended up on pole for a non championship trial race trial in Assen.

She started on pole and finished P1 ! So much for the cream rising to the top! A reverse grid will just lead to a lottery of results totally unrepresentative of any talent on the race track.

Requiring the use of two tire compounds in the race is a gimmick.
DRS is a gimmick.
Grid penalties are a gimmick.
Hybrids are a gimmick.
Fuel limits are a gimmick.

We don't do gimmicks in F1?

Well that's not entirely accurate Todd.

The two tyre rule was introduced to reduce costs but still allow variables through pit stops
DRS was a quick fix because team aerodynamicists are smarter than the FIA rule makers.
Grid Penalties are in place as part of the FIA's efforts to cut costs by limiting the free usage of engine components
Hybrids & fuel limits are part of the sport so it can look "green friendly"

So they're not really gimmicks.

The difference between these above & the stupid reverse grid idea is that at least with these thing it's equal for everyone. No one is advantaged over the others.

Tell you what.

If Renault can manage to build a decent chassis next season, that engine of theirs has the potential to put them right in the game.

I'll admit, it's a big if though.

Top speeds from FP3. I bet the drivers in the top 5 got a good tow for those speeds. Qualy should see faster speeds.

I can't understand the speed difference for Bottas compared to the others. The mercedes isn't as quick as ferrari here. I'm guessing he must have had one of the fastest cars ahead of him maintain a similar distance ahead and just made it work perfectly.
