So far, 74 votes cast, only 64 counted though. All 10 people whose votes I was unable to count I have PMed with instructions on how to rectify the problem. I am now writing a script to process the data and once we have 100 countable votes I will start posting updates on the results...

If you wait too long people would forget about 2012 in specific and rank the drivers depending on what they think of them in general. That's not what this thread wants is it ? Its supposed to rank the drivers based on 2012.

But that's exactly what it isn't.

Threads like this are based on an overall perception, not just based on 2012. They are made to see how that perception changes, amongst many users, over time.

That said, an overall ranking doesn't necessarily mean you're ranking them on their entire careers. For example, if you're ranking Jenson Button now, you're hardly going to rate him significantly lower because he was beaten by Fisichella in 2001.

Similarly, if there was one particular area where a driver used to be weak, but has improved significantly, you're not going to rank him lower based on it. A good example is Vettel's racecraft, which was awful by World Champion standards two years ago, but has improved so significantly to the point that only the blindest of haters could downgrade him based on it.

That's basically the idea that Dolomite has always had with these threads. It's actually quite tough to rank some drivers though. Guys like Massa and Maldonado, who were pretty awful for much of the season, suddenly have these great turnarounds and you're left feeling guilty for downgrading them despite them enjoying a fairly long stretch of good form. With some guys, I have to hold myself back. As sure as I am that Massa will be significantly better in 2013 than he was in the past two years, I can't factor that into my rankings until I've seen it happen.

You make a good point though about forgetting things. I was writing a 'top 10 drivers of 2012' article for a fan based website, only considering performances this year, and realised I'd forgotten quite a few incidents, which made me change my original list.

I just cannot seperate Schumacher, Perez and Hulk. Hulk is clearly the better driver on current form, but Perez showed great potential for a large portion of the season and I can't bring myself to let Hulk's error-free (but unspectacular) performances before Korea triumph over that. Schumacher has been error prone on occasions but faced a far better team-mate and would have been very evenly matched on points with him if not for misfortune at several races where he was set for big points.

Anyway, I had to think long and hard about those three. Other changes were obvious. This is my final ranking, the best and fairest I can possibly come up with.

I have updated your vote.

If anyone else wants to update their vote simply post a new list in the thread - the system I created will replace your old vote, if you just edit your old vote, unless you notify me via PM I will now know it has changed.

Looking at the 2011 Results, I guess Maldonado will be the biggest climber and Mark Webber will be the biggest faller.

You are 50% correct. Only counting drivers on both polls Mark Webber is 2 places higher than last year at the moment.

I would also say Button is one of the losers, along with Heikki

nah it still doesn't count i dont think, you have to copy and paste the actual list from the op, since the small differences make it unusable (such as the accent's on Kimi's name or the - between Jean-Eric etc)

Kovis the biggest faller. Interesting that despite a dire 75% of the year Massa has actually risen!

i thought that same thing, but then he was worse in 2011 in my eyes than 2012, because he was getting in a lot of collisions as well as being slow. I'm suprised that Maldonado is ranked so highly given his rep that he's acquired. I also wonder why Grosjean is ranked above Ricciardo, since both are great qualifies yet Grosjean was worse in races

I have created this page to show you an up to date graph of the results, with information on mean, standard deviation of places and whose list is the closest match to public opinion:

http://randomperspective.com/DOLOMITE/

At the moment, well done RaisinChips for having the closest list. Obviously, someone could now just copy the list to get the closest match but that is just cheating...

Interesting to see that Kimi has the smallest SD, while it's no surprise that Maldonado and Grosjean have the highest ones!

Interesting to see that Kimi has the smallest SD, while it's no surprise that Maldonado and Grosjean have the highest ones!

Kimi has the smallest SD because nearly everyone has ALO/HAM/VET as their top three, but in differing orders. Kimi is nearly always fourth, and then there is a huge gap (the biggest gap between two places) all the way to fifth. As a result, he has the highest SD.

With regards to Maldonado and Grosjean, well while the top four are locked out, and the bottom three are usually the same as well, it means the midfield is more spread. However, the further down the list a driver is the more likely their position will be different, because most people group similar drivers together however if there is one strange positioning (relative to the 'norm') it will push that group out by one and also make a big difference to that driver. Perez, Grosjean and Maldonado are the drivers people are most split on in this regard. I rated Maldonado highly because of his qualifying performances late in the year, and the poll is meant to reflect 'now' - I think that his win followed by his bollocking from Williams for his erratic behaviour in mid season have helped calm him down and his strengths are shining through. But others will look at his erratic behaviour over two years and understandably rank him much lower. I ranked Perez lower despite having a better year as since he got his McLaren drive his motivation seems to have dropped off. But others will look at his outstanding year prior to the announcement and rate accordingly.
