They have been talking about a 1 second gap between tyres for year, it never happens. The teams work out how to maximise each and it ends up being no more than 0.5 and sometimes odd things happen like the hard being faster when everybody expects the soft to be faster - like Perez at Monza.

Does anyone know what tyres Perez was on for that 10 lap run he just did? I hope it's soft because his times at the end of the run were 4.6 seconds slower than at the start.

No info from Autosport or McLaren.

His next run wasn't quite so bad. Although he started it with a lap roughly 1.2 seconds slower than the previous run, the decline in lap time was about 2.8 seconds after 10 laps. No idea how hard he's actually trying, fuel loads, tyres etc but it's interesting when compared to Vettel's earlier 10 lap run, which saw only a 1.2 second drop in lap time.

Three lap run on soft tyres, same as Bianchi's current P1 time.

Not a great run for Hamilton there, times started out fairly slow and dropped off dramatically. Even managed a 1:30 lap at the end of the stint.

Could have got a little traffic on one of the laps. Maybe that's why you see greater lap times.

Why so much focus on times? It's testing. They're not necessarily going for laptimes. They're doing science!

The tyre deg on the Mercedes is still not looking good so far this year

Andrew Benson, Chief F1 writer
"Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn has been talking to the media about his first experience of working with Lewis Hamilton at the track. 'It's still very early in terms of understanding what he wants from a car perspective, and of course we're at one circuit for one day,' Brawn said. 'He's clearly a person who enjoys being involved at all levels and that's a great motivation for the team. He's been working hard with the engineers this test, he's been here on the days when Nico's been driving with a headset and listening what's been going on, so everything I hoped he would be.' Brawn said optimism in the team was 'reasonably strong', adding: 'There is an awful lot to do but both drivers are putting a lot energy into the team. We know what happened last year; we know what we need to do this year. We need to quietly get on with it, not panic and make sure we do things in the right way."

Indeed, but right now they're all doing fairly long stints for the first time, so it's interesting to compare things like lap time drop off. Nobody is about to place bets based on this data but it's still something to discuss.

IMO this passive DRS is cr*p. The car is very unbalanced they should skip it. Yesterday the car ran better without it!
The merc has underteer at corner enrtys and oversteer at the exits it's a tyre killer

Hamilton (105) and Gutierrez (120) are competing for most lappage today.

55 laps for Gutierrez's race sim with 3 stops in 80 mins track time.
fastest lap 1:24.043.

If they knew what they needed to do they wouldn't have been in such a mess last year. Strikes me as the one thing they didn't know was what to do, especially with their tyre issues.

That was one massive stint by Hamilton, it doesn't show an outlap halfway through but im tipping he must have pitted for tyres?

40 laps and two stops.

His fastest lap was right at the start of that stint: 1:24.606

I wouldn't say any team is fastest, but the Marussia is definitely slow.

Oh come on. There are a million possible reasons for a day-to-day change that have absolutely nothing to do with passive DRS.

If Merc still haven't got their tyre deg sorted then they are in for a rough ride this year with Pirelli's new, faster wearing tyres. They'll need to be on top of that by the final test day.

Sorting tire degradation was a process that continued to the end of last season - you don't figure it out and then you're all set. Its on-going with changing conditions, changes to your car, and each circuit's characteristics. Each time the teams thought they understood tire behavior last year, it changed, especially for the first 2/3 of the season.

Any competition he'll try to win it...I'd wager he's trying to beat Nico's 148 from yesterday if anything.

Well session over, he got to 145 laps (the most out of anyone for the day). A solid day of testing for Merc.

Sauber comes a close second with 142 laps.

Fastest lap by Kimi, 1:18.148
Slowest (fast) lap by Di Resta, 1:23.435
