so with all that secrecy going on in spain i am curious: can teams just put one small new part on the car at a time and assess the part itself and - from the gathered data - make predictions on how the part will work with the final package?

i'm pretty sure the top teams won't show their big guns before the 3rd round of testing but they will have to do some evaluation before - kind of a safehouse-plan...

i'm a bit confused here becaus adrian newey once stated that, if you change a small part at the rear you have to start over from the front of the car, since that's where the airflow comes from - now how could a team assess parts at the rear without changing nose/front-wings?

Not sure about all teams, but certainly the top teams will have lots of computer modelling about new parts and how they could affect the car. They'll be then able to use that to model the car in a number of different layouts and therefore when they add a single new part to the car, they'll be able to record the telemetry and see whether or not the results match up with what they would predict for that layout.

That can help them determine whether or not the final layout will be as they expect once they apply all parts at once...

Lotus falling behind already

Kimi must be thinking about his next career move, while LdM is laughing.

The Lotus looks to be very competitive why would LDM be laughing?

looking very much like a (partial) race-sim by SV ... could be the first real indicator...

Raikkonen rejoins. He has yet to set a time today due to requiring a gearbox change.

so last years race-times started at about 1:30.6 and did not really change for the first stint... second stint wasn't much quicker with about 1:29.5 ... however that was at 8-10°C higher temps and a properly rubbered track...

Well the tyres are different this year and i imagine the cars are quicker?

now - that is very much the point... the cars are meant to be quicker, espacially considering maldonado setting the pace at barca last year... tires are meant to be quicker about 1 sec as well... still vettels times were off between 1 and 2 secs mostly - except for the very first lap which was a 1.29

again ... temps are lower than during the race last year...

basically i was just wondering if anyone in the forums was bold enough to do some number-crunching based on that data ;)

I have a mega number crunch coming up this weekend that will relate lap time stability and drop off through 2012 to 2013 test data. You will like it. But I have to wait for all the drivers to have a go in barca so you will also wait.

they were doing race sim - someone probably didn't get a wheel tight when he came in for the pit stop or something. They are testing the traffic light system instead of the lollipop.

Yeah let's not forget less than a year ago Nico won a race.

Can't see then outdeveloping Red Bull over the year though.

They certainly seem to have found something in the Merc.... and if it's holding it's own come mid season then who knows; after all, all the teams will want to cut off development as early as possible to maximise on the 2014 spec.

I'm so going to have to eat those words....
