I suppose it's not bad that he's scored 269 from a maximum of 300 points. Seems like the paddock is pretty unanimous is declaring him 'a' top if not 'the' top driver of 2012.

Congrats.

But I have to say I m surprised. Could it be that the paddock is fed up with Vettel winning everything in sight.

No surprises there! But I am surprised Massa made the top 10.

This poll always makes me really curious how people voted.

Quote:
He was voted as best driver by eight of the 12 team principals.

Probably fair to say Horner and Tost must have been two of the four. And that a lot of Pere'z points came from McLaren!

Poor old di Resta really has had a miserable end to the season. From being perceived broadly equal with Hulk earlier in the year he's lost out on a promotion, tiddled off his team, seen his teammate ranked in the top 10, ended with a big mistake... and now he's being told the people who really matter rate Massa more highly than him.

Or they could just have been honest?
I'm a Vettel fan, but when voting for driver of the year my vote would go to Alonso. He has been outstanding, Vettel has made a few errors. Nothing much more to it than that.

Alonso was fantastic this year. He, Hamilton, Kimi and Vettel where definitely the Class of 2012.

If this is like previous years, the max isn't 300 points.

Usually the team bosses aren't allowed to vote for their own drivers. So thats like 269 from 275

Maybe. But votes here in PF1 also nominate Alonso the best in 2012 and in fact Vettel came third behind Hamilton in Dolomite's thread if I'm correct. Pundits, commentators and ex drivers have been piling praise on Alonso all season. So I'm not sure why you're surprised.

Thanks anyway.

I agree. Alonso I found very impressive. Lewis was great when the car worked and when the pitstops didn't let him down. Kimi had a spectacular comeback year, and Vettel drove well and when he had the car, was usually in the lead. for my money, those 4 represent the best F1 has to offer at this time. I'd love Ferrari, Mercedes, Lotus and Red Bull to be really even next year so we get a 4 way fight. I'd happily take another season like 2012 though, been a good year for F1.

Deserved IMO. Certainly a top drive from him this year, and I say that grinding my teeth as I've not been a Alonso fan at all...but this year I cant deny he's been pretty amazing and brought the car home with no dramas or childish behaviour that a few other drivers seem to suffer from.

Wouldn't work. Points difference is 6 points, whereas the scheme deducts a minimum of 7. :)

I'm guessing 8xP1 (200), 3xP2 (54), 1xP3 (15). That P3 is probably from Horner.

I was thinking that myself and couldn't work it . Usually they don't let the bosses vote for their own guys because then it's a sure fire 25 and 18 for their own 2.

IMO Williams was one of them, he does not rate Alonso very high
IMO Williams voted for Hamilton.

The fact they are not allowed to vote for their drivers is ridiculous because if they all voted for their own 1-2, it would obviously cancel the other ones, so it doesn't matter really.

I think they initially could not vote for their own drivers, but that it was changed last year. Not sure, though.

Surprised Lewis Hamilton is so low, personally I found it impossible to separate him and Alonso for driver of the year. And judging from the 'Rank the Drivers' thread from this forum, nor can quite a few others.

sorry j man.... any ranking on this forum is going to be somewhat out of balance. Hamilton is, has been, and most likely continue to be a forum favorite... hence the difference. That is just the way it is.

This poll was of the Team Bosses, not fan based.

Team bosses don't display girly style fan worship for certain drivers, unlike forums.

So the driver who comes close second wins this most of the time. Bar last year when Vettel was literally the only choice and 2008. Seems fairly worthless.

I think this award is more reflective of the best driver than the WDC.

2009 - Vettel (Button huge car advantage, still nearly lost it)
2010 - Alonso (Vettel significant car advantage, still nearly lost it)
2011 - Vettel (no one could get close, so difficult to identify an alternative - maybe no need)
2012 - Alonso (came so close despite driving the Ferrari dog)

James Allen agrees: http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2012/12/m ... s-of-2012/

He points out that Alonso did mess up in Suzuka and wasn’t as good as Massa in qualifying during the last two races. Vettel also made a mistake in Malaysia and was slow in the early season. Apparently a tiebreaking factor is that Vettel was out-qualified by his teammate eight times.

I feel like the top 3 or 4 drivers this year were stronger than the top 3 or 4 of any year I’ve watched, so how you order them isn’t particularly important. It was a lot of fun to watch.

Based on the last four years, I created a spreadsheet and it shows Vettel leading Alonso by a huge margin. I multiplied the 2009 points by 2.5 to get an equivalent of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 points system. So Vettel is the overall winner.

Vettel 849
Alonso 783.5
Hamilton 657.5
Button 557.5
Webber 357
