We had a similar thread at the old forum, and it's gone. I will list some I know, and if you know any more, please add:

Francois Cevert - Piano
Gilles Villeneuve - Trumpet, Clarinet, Piano (he had prospects of plying Clarinet in Philharmonic orchestra)
Bruno Giacomelli - Piano
Elio De Angelis - Piano (well educated)
Damon Hill - Guitar
Jacques Villeneuve - Guitar
Adrian Sutil - Piano (well educated)

Lewis Hamilton - guitar (open to debate on talent according to the other thread, but there's videographic proof that he can play) :D
Can we say Eddie Jordan - drums? I know he's not a driver but still... it's EJ!

Edit: I'm sure I've also seen Seb Vettel on stage with a guitar at an event somewhere, don't know if he could play though.

Good idea for a thread.

I believe Sutil was/is virtually concert standard. His father is a well respected violinist and little Sutil was to be a pro pianist until he had to choose piano or cars.

Algesuari's a DJ and must produce too as he has an album (that sold very well I think).

I did remember hearing something like that about Sutil so I did a google & this is what I found:

Adrian Sutil has the distinctive background for the F1 world of not only not racing in go-karts as a small child, but in having had a first career as a concert pianist. His parents are professional musicians, and he began playing piano at four and performed in public. His life seemed set until he discovered go-karting at 14 and never looked back.

And I have read many an article about Algesuari being a DJ :D

Here's a clip of Elo de Angelis playing the piano at the Nurburgring in 1985:

and here's one of Adrian Sutil tinkling the electronic ivories in Mumbai:

From the linked video:

Back in the FISA-FOCA war days of the early 80's, they were supposed to race in the South African GP (1982) but the drivers refused to race if not certain things were resolved first. A strike if you will
Hence they locked themselves in the hotel they were staying in and refused to come out until matters were solved
Elio de Angelis started to entertain the bored drivers by playing the piano and those who were there remembered it well.According to Prost he would have made a great concert pianist

He plays VERY nice on the video!! While Sutil does a bad job (i bet he was extremely nervous!)

PS: Another comment:

I remenber, Once, Alain Prost told that when all drivers stayed in a Hotel room to boycott the race by fighting between FIA and teams,(maybe around 1982...)
there was nothing to do but waiting...Elio de Angelis, however, began to playing piano to let them all relax.
Prost could not forget how beautiful is the playing and fascinated...
I love and could not forget this story.

Eddie Jordan - Spoons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNhNhldMOlo)
Sebastian Vettel - Guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7WZ8k2sEas) Well, he's not very good!

Coincidentally, I read a lovely little passage today about James Hunt..

Quote:
Later, at the Royal Albert Hall, James took to the stage himself - in his trademark jeans and T-shirt - treating the capacity audience to an enthusiastic trumpet solo during a televised 'Grand Prix Night of the Stars'. Everyone thought James played admirably well, though there was an admitted curiosity value to his performance. According to the journalist Eoin Young, James's trumpet virtuosity 'might be compared to the dancing bear - applauded not so much for the quality of the dance as the fact that he could do it at all'.

in 1961 before Holland GP, amateur driver Count Carel Godin de Beaufort organized an F1-band to promote the GP
Jim Clark - Drums
Dan Gurney - Bass
Bruce McLaren - Percussion
Graham Hill - Accordion
Trevor Taylor - Maracas
Carel Godin de Beaufort - Organs

From F1-Racing. There's a picture in the magazine, but I can't find it in the internet :(

Adrian Sutil was educated in a classic music and now finds himself playing some rock/entertaining music; that does not come as a easy thing for someone that comes from Sutil family. They are classic performers. And deep in their conscience they are educated in this way: "classic music is honorable and noble", "rock music is downgrading art and humanity to a dirt". I know that mindset well, being educated in classical music.

So, it does not come as a surprise that Adrian is having hard time playing those low, worthless, cheap entertaining compositions to please the sponsors. It's a downgrade to him. And you can read it from his face.

Or I am just over-exaggerating the whole matter. :)

Doesn't mean he can actually play ;) Any fool can start whacking an electric drum kit. We need a vid of him playing for it to count - the same applies to everyone really :)

Not quite a drumkit - but it is a percussion instrument...and Seb is playing it (well, almost): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAJTzx4tIOI

I've got a vague memory of him doing some sort of promo piece for British TV when he was a rookie. They took him to an empty Albert Hall and set him up on the stage to play some stuff.

No they're not. You really have no idea what you are talking about.

Some producers happen to be musicians, but to say that producer = musician is completely false. There are also many different classes and categories of music producer, who do different things in their day to day work.

What i think that happened is that Adrian is used to playing classical pieces with prior rehearsal and the score in front of him. This time he was required to improvise something that is totally alien to what he is used to play, and -even worse- under the pressure of being televised. That's why i think he got extremely nervous.

As for the mindset, what can i say? Half of my records are classical-music, but i'm also a rocker. One thing shouldn't exclude another... i.e:

Not that I studied Music Technology for 4 years or anything...

I obviously worded my sentence incorrectly and generalised that all producers are musicians. I was more so saying that Algesuari is more than likely a musician due to his producing and the genre of Music he produces. He will probably be fluent in playing the keyboard and that is was I meant.

No need to bite my head off for a simple mistake.

As noted by the OP, Gilles Villeneuve was accepted to study the clarinet at Quebec Conservatoire. He didn't go but he continued to play. There is a short clip of him playing "Summertime" on the trumpet at the end of this tribute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuqneBVzSTc

I've seen Seb attempt to play the guitar, the tambourine, the drums, and a french horn. He really needn't quit his day job.

And I see we have one of those people who think electronic music producers can't be musicians
