Heres a thing though if F1 was to race at an oval like the Indy. Would they be able due to the dirty air F1 cars produce?

If you think about it the dirty air even in low downforce trim affects the cars behind. On an oval you need to slipstream to overtake. with the dirty air you would never be able to stay close enough I think. Would they be able too?

Every type of car causes dirty air, and any sort of car utilising downforce at all suffers from this. It is not F1 specific, even in NASCAR they talk about it being a problem.

Yes but in some formulas it is more prevalent than others. IIRC because of the ground effect and skinny wings it doesn't affect Indy on ovals as much as it would on a F1 car with a similar levels as downforce.

Sorry, it sounded like you were implying that only F1 cars have that issue.

Indeed ground effect is less affected by dirty air issues, but Indycars generate far less downforce than F1 cars anyway, so although F1 cars would "loose" a higher proportion of their downforce, it's more than likely that they'd still have more than Indycars.

If they loose a hiogh proportion of their Downforce then they wouldn't make the corners.

Remember in fast corners like 130R and parabolica they are about on the limit of their grip and The top speed is still lower than an Indy.

So if they dropped the wing to get the extra speed, they loose downforce obviously.Would they be able to turn on an oval. I think thats the question

As for the indy producing less DF I'm not sure I read a think the other day that said an F1 car at 190MPH is basically double it's weight. So thats something like 1400LBs. From an Indy test at Iowa apparently.



If I am right that's 1500lbs at 180mph.

On Monza, they'll go 370 km/u (low downforce, highspeed setup) whereas on e.g. Abu Dhabi they would hit about 320.

F1 is/was on a different level......But I loved champ cars from mid 90s on , they looked like real beasts and the racing was absolute amazing

Not 370 though is it.

I know thats why I posted speed traps. 2011 I think.

But being that F1 cars can get up to 220mph in a straight while indy cars take a couple of laps to do 230 i believe an F1 car could out run an indy car if they geared it for whatever oval they put it on. and of course all the other proper setup.

an f1 car would probably be flat around every oval the indycars race at.

indy is slower these days. around 1996 to 2002 champcars were quick. now they suck
