2012 - got to be Rosberg, he even stepped out of his car while others on track still couldn't get close

2011 - i'd say Hamilton in Korea since it was the only non-Red Bull pole, honorable mention to Button in Suzuka (couple of thousands down on Vettel's pole time)

2010 - back to back poles from Alonso, Singapore probably the more impressive one

schumi did a great lap in monaco, but it wasnt the best lap of the year as he admitted "it wasnt the perfect lap, but it was just enough"

2012- Rosberg lap in china
2011- Hamilton in Korea only non Red bull pole of the year
2010- Robert Kubica at Monaco just brilliant dragging that car onto the front row- This is the best in the last 3 years in my opinion

2012 - Schumacher in Monaco. The last spark in a wonderful career. Honerable mention to Button in Spa though.

2011 - Hamilton in Korea. Should have been a Red Bull.

2010 - I genuinely can't remember much from Quali now.

De La Rosa at Monaco 2012. He didn't think they would be able to break the 1:19 barrier. He did a 1:18.096.

I remember one lap of Vettel's at Monza, perhaps even in Q2 either this year or last where he got loads of oversteer exiting the Ascari chicane and for some season that always stuck with me. Great car control.

Also Hamilton at Korea 2011 and Bruno Senna at Spa 2011 were great because they were unexpected.

Hulkenberg's pole at Brazil in 2010 has always stuck with me. Very brave lap in the slick but improving conditions. I tried to find a video link but was unsuccessful in finding a good version on my phone. If any is on a PCM and can help me out it would be appreciated.

Maldonado probably had a few this year that were up there. Singapore springs to mind. Grosjean at Australia was impressive too.

So?

Schumacher at Monza 1998.

Schumacher at Japan every year. Ridiculous.

Best ever ever quali lap. It has to be Jacques villeneuve in australia 97. No driver within 1.7 seconds and no non Williams driver within 2 seconds of his lap. And could of gone faster at the end if not for traffic

A comparison. His 1st lap 5 mins into the session was still a 8 tenths or so faster than anyone else could manage for the rest of the session.

As for this year. Split with lewis at singapore and schumi at Monaco.
2011. They all moulded into 1 massive vettel fest. So anything that a red bull did not start from pole
2010. Hulk at brazil
2009. Hamilton at hungaroring I think it was.

Kimi had some mega qualy laps over the years. So too did MSC and Mika. Hamilton's pulled out some blistering laps too.

The best battle for me though, has to be between Mika and Michael at Suzuka 2000. SO close and the race was epic! A constant push all the way till the end. I miss those years :( Especially the great respect drivers (well, some of them) had for one another. Kids these days though... *rollseyes*

He could have been quicker in turn 1 I think. Correction made mid turn

Most incredible qualifying result, Jerez 1997. Three drivers finish on the same pole time to the thousandth of a second.

Too many others to mention for a single driver's lap for the rest.

I've only been into F1 since Silverstone '10 so my three would be:

2010 (post Silverstone): Alonso at Singapore
2011: Hamilton at Nurburgring
2012: Toss up between Maldonado-Spain or Button-Spa

Honorable mentions to Hulkernburg-Brazil '10, Hamilton-Korea '11, Maldonado and Hamilton-Singapore '12, Schumacher-Monaco '12 and Grosjean-Australia '12

I can't see it mentioned so I'll just throw another contender for 2012 in: Ricciardo at Sakhir

Alonso: Hocenheim , Silverstone 2012
Maldonado : singapore , spain, spa 2012
Grosjean : australlia 2012
Vettel : Q2 lap Monza 2011 (completely sideways in the middle of ascari)

wont ever forget maldonado last lap in FP3 at austin , extreme car control !
and also alonso and massa in monaco 2011 FP1 and FP2 for some reasons , they were driving the cars like it was the last laps on existence

In a sense it doesn't mean too much. The best 5 laps in F1 were basically perfect.

Lots of those from above and Vettel in Suzuka 2011... unexpected because Hamilton and Button were on fire.

Rocky summed it up pretty well: "Pole position! How about that?!"

Kimi at hockenhiem 2005 was best since I started watching f1. A great battle for pole with Montoya and a nice drift through one of the corners.

Last 3 years however I would say Nico Hulkenberg Brazil 2010.

Hakkinen 2000, final seconds of qualifying, yellow flags due to someone stopping on track, puts his hand up to acknowledge the flag approaching rasscasse, gets pole....amazing

I'd love to be biased and say Schumi at Monaco this year, but Rosberg in China just edges it.

As soon as he threw it into Turn 1 I knew it was gonna be a good lap. Committed.

Shame he disappeared for the rest of the season...

Not sure if you've got your races mixed up because Hakkinen wasn't on pole at Monaco 2000.

That was 1999. Hill stopped his car not in Rascasse, but before Tabac (after chicane at the end of tunnel):
