We have, I think, a very interesting situation created by the Hamilton and Perez moves... A driver with bags of talent in a team yet to prove capable of consistently producing a race-winning car (if you ignore the Brawn heritage), and a team well-capable of building race winners consistently with a driver yet to prove himself in the top flight.

So who do you think will win a race first?

Om paper Perez.

In reality I'd say Hamilton.

If Mercedes get an equally good start to 2013 as they did this year, Hamilton could do it. If not, Pérez is the probable first winner of the two.

I reckon it will be Perez.

Putting down the mark in Oz. What happens after then who knows.

I think it is difficult to call; I'm a Hamilton fan who believes he has had some great drives in sub-par cars, but I think Perez is more likely. Schumacher may have been past his prime, and Rosberg may still be unproven, but it is fair to say that neither of them are poor drivers, and they have failed to achieve much with Mercedes cars.

Then you take Perez who has shown flashes of talent, and a McLaren team that has more often than not had a couple of races per season as the fastest car since 2007. I can't imagine Perez not winning a race this year, but I can imagine Hamilton struggling. for that reason I'm going Perez.

I fear that Hamilton and Mercedes won't be that quick from the very first race.

Mercedes will be favourites in China (last 3 years: 4th, 4th and 1st/3rd in qualifying, leading all 3 races, 3rd place in 2010, 5th in 2011 only because morons underfueled Rosberg and of course victory in 2012), which is 3rd race of the season.

On the other had Perez proved in 2012 he is fast in every race, which was not confirmed in the end results only because he had even worse treatment from the team than Hamilton: gearbox failures, suspension failures, botched pit stops, unbelievably stupid strategy decisions, sabotaging his weekend in India by taking FP1 away from him (which didn't work  - he outqualified Kobayashi by 1 second and was lapping faster than him in the race by the same margin) and tons of simply bad luck. I don't expect any big problems in adapting to new team and car, but Mercedes biggest chance for winning is already during 3rd GP weekend, so it may be difficult to bag a win in the first 2. Looking at his racing history he's great in Australia and monstrous in Monaco (winning in GP2 in 2010 in front of Monaco specialist Maldonado, Q3 in 2011 but then huge mistake and crash, in 2012 he would fight for pole position and win if not for suspension failure in Q1, while Kobayashi was absolutely nowhere in qualifying), so it's a difficult call.

My choice would be Perez, but only just.

India wasn't that the race he might have missed due to being sick?

He's not even in McLaren yet and the sabotage theories are starting

Yes, that's the race when eventhough he admitted he was perfectly ok to drive in practice session, team decided to use Gutierrez. And this is what I called sabotaging, I don't know why you somehow connected it to McLaren.

I think Perez will win in the first 5 races. Hamilton will scrape a win together from something.

I meant to put some laughy smilies but hit the wrong button. I was taking the Pee because of all the Hamilton was sabotaged posts we've had on here.

But with Slim paying for both Esteban and Sergio I don't think they would have had to make up an excuse. Besides if he was well enough to do the practice how come he wasn't well enough to do the PR commitments ;)

Perez-Macca combo should have the advantage. But who knows, maybe Merc will turn something out...

People who voted for Hamilton need to rememeber that Ham is in a Merc while Perez is in a Macca ( assuming the merc is as fast as the 2012 merc and macca is fast as the 2012 macca )

Perez winning, am i mad? I voted for Perez, because i expect the Mercedes to be a bit of a dog and the McLaren to be right up there. I based my theory on the fact that i can't see Button winning in anything other than a really good car, suited to him and Perez seems like a very similar driver. By default the Mercedes will be as it has in the past rubbish, spelt with four letters!

I hope it's Rosberg before Hamilton and Hamilton before Perez. :D

But, realistically, the McLarens should win before the Merc. But who knows, really? It's F1. Anything can happen.

Pirelli will be giving more aggressive tires for 2013, I expect Perez to manage them a lot better and pull out a win before Hamilton. On top of that, there's not a doubt in my mind McLaren will have another strong package next season, can't say the same for Mercedes.

However, I do think Hamilton will finish in the points waaaay more consistently over the season.

Merc in China otherwise Perez takes one early on with the new spec tyres. More likely neither driver wins a race in 2013 tho.

I reckon Perez. In fact I'll say that Hamilton won't win any races next year on the basis that Merc are probably looking more at 2014, and given that there are no major regulation changes fo next year I expect the pecking order to remain similar.

I think Hamilton. Mercedes will be disaster at Australia, but usually they are stronger at the beginning of season. If Hamilton is going to win, he will do it during first part of season. It can be Chinese GP. By the European part, Brawn will switch to 2014 car development.... On the other hand Perez may need some time to get used to new car and team.

Lewis. I reckon he will only wait till Canada to win a race at the max.

If nothing else , Canada is his for the taking. He would win that in a Caterham.

Hamilton has the best chance of winning at the beginning of the season. When all the cars are less developed and there's less chance of a car being clearly superior. Perez will pick up as the season goes on, and he will have some very good moments. Button will have a season where he won't win the title, but he will be consistent.

I hope it's Perez. I think it depends a lot on Merc's car, but I reckon it's gonna be Sergio.

If Hamilton has the car, you know he'll deliver. I just don't think he'll get the car, and I expect to see Perez on the top step at least once next year.

Surely Perez in a Macca is a more likely combination. Still, I'd prefer Hamilton to get one in first. I have a horrible feeling that if Perez gets and early win he might get too big for his boots. I could be wrong, but thats the vibe I'm getting.

Hamilton's unlikely to have the car to win. If you said "who's more likely to impress given what is to be expected of them in their relative cars" then I'd say Hamilton. Anything above 5th is a good result in a Merc usually, so Hamilton can impress. Anything less than a podium is a disappointment to Macca really. Perez will be expected to be right up there, Hamilton will be expected to be down the field. So relatively, I think Hamilton will impress more than Perez, though not necessarily beating him.

You have to consider that the McLaren was a consistent race winning car last season whilst the Mercedes ended up being quite a poor car so it has to be Perez with the best chance of winning first

A 'neither' option should have been added...

I get the feeling merc have been focusing on the 2013 car quite early and could turn up strong at the start of 2013 at least i don't think ready for a win though, McLaren started last year and ended last year strong so should be fav.

if Mercedes learn how to manage their tires, they would be right up there, not as fast as RBR consistently but they'll have better days, people make it seem like they are that fairy cakes pace wise,Rosberg regularly makes it into q3 but as usual they eat the tires like crazy meaning they can't do anything with that pace in the race...who knows how the 2013 tires would work on the car,and hate him or love him but Lewis ability in terms of pace is something that one can't question anymore...that being said,i expect Perez to win first, the Mclaren is traditionally fast in Australia and last year they were very fast there and seeing as the tables would pretty much remain the same,it's most likely they'll win there again at the start of the season.

Very interesting question!
Going by 2012 car form it should be Perez. But if the Mercedes is good, it could be Hamilton.
The car as always is the most important factor.
