Raikkonen and Hamilton went off a few times in the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix. Any earlier than that.. isn't easy to remember.

Hunt exited his heavily-damaged car after an accident at the start of the '76 British Grand Prix, then went on to win after repairs were made during the red flag period. He was disqualified months later after Ferrari appealed, giving Lauda the victory.

Alonso in the 2005 European Grand Prix at Nurburgring. He went off and on to the gravel at the Dunlop curve.

(edit: if the thread starter meant leading the race at the moment of going off then 2005 Nurburgring probably isn't in the list. I can't remember if Alonso was ahead of Kimi at the moment he went off on the gravel. Probably not.)

Hamilton went into the barriers at Monaco in 08 and still won.

Schumacher France 1997. Slipped off as it began to rain near the front of the track.
Schumacher Belgium 1992. Went off, saw team mate Brundle's tyres were finished, came in for new tyres and won the race as result.
Raikkonen Australia 2007. Slipped off track slightly.
Raikkonen Belgium 2009 should count really after the first corner...

Ah, but Schumacher wasn't leading. Far from it.

Some missed by you all, since 2000:

China 2012 - Rosberg made mistake in Turn 4 or 5 before first round of stops
Italy 2011 - Vettel, with half of his car :D
Bahrain 2008 - Massa went off track on oil left by one of the first lap retirees
Italy 2008 - Vettel made mistake in second chicane
Belgium 2001 - Schumacher ran wide in Stavelot
Belgium 2000 - Hakkinen almost crashed in Stavelot

Probably I forgot few, but what the hell.

Graham Hill Monaco 1965. Not only did he leave the track (taking to an escape road to avoid another car) but he got out of the car and pushed it back to the track, got back in, overtook four cars and completed a hat trick of Monaco race wins.

True. My head was thinking of drivers who went on to win despite an excursion!

Francois Cevert went off before winning his one and only Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1971.

Extract from Wiki:

"Having started from fifth spot, Cevert took the lead from Stewart on lap 14 as the Scot's tires began to go off in the 100° heat. At about half-distance, Cevert finally began to struggle with the same understeer that had plagued Stewart much earlier. Jacky Ickx was closing, and his Firestones were getting better as the race went on. On lap 43, Ickx set the fastest lap of the race, and the gap was down to 2.2 seconds. Then, on lap 49, the alternator on Ickx's Ferrari fell off, punching a hole in the gearbox and spilling oil all over the track! Denny Hulme's McLaren hit the oil and spun into the barrier, bending his front suspension. Hulme was standing beside the track when Cevert came by and also slid off and hit the barrier, but he kept going, now 29 seconds in the lead! Cevert coasted home, taking both hands off the wheel to wave as he crossed the line."

I guess it would more common these days as drivers can go off the track without any real penalty. Hamilton in Monaco 2008 is the best example I can remember as he was pretty lucky to get away with it as not many drivers can clout the barrier that hard and still continue racing. After all Alonso made the same mistake in that race and was forced to retire.

Think so. He lost 5 seconds to Hakkinen but I can't remember if DC was still in the lead at the time?

from recent memory:

Jenson: china 2010, Brazil 2012? and Hungary 2011 (when battling with Lewis)
Hamilton: Spa 2010
I am not sure if Vettel did it in either 2011 or 2012, anyone?
Korea 2010 i think Alonso went off when leading.
I can't remember but surely someone must have gone off when leading in either china or Nurburgring 2007

I think Hamilton did that twice. Pretty sure he was one of the cars who went straight on at the damp bus stop at the end of lap 1.

Worth the watch though, regardless of the final outcome... best final few laps I saw in a long time.

This thread makes me realize that I have a terrible memory. Only Spa 2008 comes to mind and that's not really a 'win'.

Button in China 2010, locked up his brakes at T14 near the end of the race and went straight on.
Button in Hungary 2011, ran wide at T2 whilst battling and leading Hamilton.

I remember the odd race or two during Schumacher's dominant years that he appeared to lose concentration and had a spin. Probably due to boredom. It never affected his race as he probably would have been leading by half a lap or so.

I have an image of him spinning at Spa 2001 or 2002. At the bus stop chicane I think. Could be mistaken.

Couldn't have been much farther from the truth, I don't think. If he had to pit at the end, he'd have been screwed over by the safety car. It was in the early stages of the race and he slammed into the barrier after Tabac.

I do vaguely remember something about Hamilton having a slow puncture towards the end of the race, possibly caused by Rosberg's debris? But it was so near the end he got away with it. I'm sure McLaren said that one or two more laps and the tyre could have gone flat and he'd have had to pit.

Except:
1) He was disqualified after the race for (see 3)
2) He was given a push start from the marshals (think illegal now)
3) He rejoined via an escape road he shouldn't have done.

Doesn't count.

Also, while I understand the less severe punishment these days, I seem to remember a fair few in the 90s that managed to keep it together. I'm probably mixing up with drivers that either weren't leading at the time and/or leaders that went off and still finished in the points/on the podium. I'd have to go through results to prove it to myself either way.
