Post subject:  What role would You choose if entering the world of F1?

There are many roles in F1, which a person could either choose based on instinct, skill or aptitude. Considering if a wish through magic was to be granted, which role(s) in F1 would You like to make a career of? There are some roles where a person can't directly start as a career mentioned in the poll, but hypothetically nothing wrong in considering.

Being a F1 driver would be the 1st choice, but if not that, then would love to be a Team Principal.

What about You guys?

Driver. They are the ones who get the millions and the public glory. The mechanics and other team personnel are forgotten by Monday morning.

1. Driver - Obvious answer here. Perhaps the best job in the world (for some people, at least). Lots of money, lots of publicity. You get to drive the fastest cars in the world around the best tracks in the world, 8 months a year and get paid squillions to do it. I'd do it for free.

2. Interviewer - Personal choice here. I'll hopefully have finished my degree at the end of this year and that'd be a dream job.

3. F1 Chief - You're Bernie. You've got all the money in the world and can do whatever you like with it. How could you say no?

4. Team Principal - Lots of work, no doubt, but hugely rewarding I'm sure. You're the boss and any success is, fundamentally, down to your actions.

Race driver or F1 chief, it quite honestly doesn't matter. Both are fun roles in their own way. If I couldn't change my personality before choosing the job, there's no way I would ever be a race driver, so I'd simply take the spot as F1 chief, do a little of what I want to do, and then comfortably retire with more money than I can count and hopefully a near century ahead of me.

If we discount the possibility of a magic lamp, I'd love to become a track designer. :-P
Even more realistically, a car designer - that's actually a viable career choice! Now off to see where to study...

I'd say a driver but I don't even have a license yet -.-
I'd be contented with being the lollypop man, or the guy that wipes the driver's visor.
Actually, I'd take any job that would let me go inside the paddock with all them drivers, engineers, and F1 personnel on a regular basis.

Race Driver - Ofcourse, goes without saying! I'd be epic (gotta have confidence.)
Team Owner - I've always wanted to own a team, I've even toyed with setting up a junior category team to the point of making huge detailed plans and budgets and proposals etc, but then I realised I'm lazy.
Race Engineer - I like that side of things too :)

Another one, Safety Car driver... I'd love to do that as well.

You could term Adrian Newey as a Aerodynamist or as per my poll suggestions, Technical Director, even though he is the Chief Technical Officer.

That title is just a technicality. Newey is indeed the lead aerodynamicist at RBR regardless of that title belonging to Peter Prodromou. Adrian still pencils in all the sketches for the cars dawning his signature, and the entire car is developed based on his design. Furthermore, every aspect of the car's aero must receive his approval before they are green lit and tested on the cars. Prodromou is no doubt very capable, but his place currently is as Newey's right hand man and runs the aero department and development under Newey's guidance. Newey is still calling the shots and masterminding the exploitation of the rules, such as the flexi wings which then evolved to the flex/rubberized nose to achieve the same effect. This is where someone like a Prodromou is perhaps not as ingenious or slick and is precisely why Newey has been so successful at times in his career.

Safety car driver, you go to all the races, spending most of your time watching the race, only having to go out when an accident occurs, and it doesn't even matter if you are a slow driver as you are simply pacing the field, personally that would be a great job :)

He can't be the head of aero and Tech director at the same time.

A tech director is responsible for having everything optimized together so he sets the clear vision for the car and sets the ideas on how to link and optimize each system with the other. that includes going over everything making sure they fit those plans and making sure the engineers do all the necessary studies and work necessary. the people who actually design each system and optimize it to set that vision are however the heads of each department.

Newey would say for example, we need to use exhaust to warm the rears and we need to get the rear end to generate a X amount more of down force when cornering for the turn in and we can lose that in steady state.
Aero head, suspension head and engine head now start their process and come up with multiple solutions assessing each of them to the finest detail. the Tech director then evaluates each option and selects which one to use of each team after assessing development, potential and integration of each system. and the same is repeated each week for each development direction taken.

Now how he can do another job beside that is beyond me, specially a head of aerodynamics position

I find it interesting that you don't see the contradiction in what you wrote, in that it totally coincides with what I said. Why don't we have an "epic facepalm" emoticon?

I am a Production Manager and while my job is technically the technical director, I oversee EVERYTHING that leaves here which means I say how things need to get done, in what fashion and who needs to do what to get it all done in a timely fashion. I literally engineer and oversee the entire process from beginning to end and once everyone is done, I put all their pieces together and create the final product personally so I can then preflight everything to ensure all is 100% before being sent out for production. About the only thing Newey doesn't do is build the cars himself. And while he's out and about traveling to races with the team, he cannot physically be there to oversee all the processes at the factory, rest assured the staff is carrying out his orders under Prodromou's supervision. HOWEVER, when time permits Adrian is at the factory, working to further develop his cars, both present and future and whenever possible he is int he wind tunnel with the staff testing and analyzing data. Newey is very hands-on when it comes to his work and nothing else will do.

then why the extra help, and extra salaries? to do monkey work, press enter and wait for the simulation and deliver back the results?!

you may be right but from my experience i don't see it possible, i have worked on designing a race car during my school years and still am on a separate project (not a race car) i have worked as a team head, member and technical director during my time and it is just impossible, just setting up the big picture and keeping track of that is difficult enough.

If Newey does what you say he does then how on earth do Redbull out develop teams, Newey is on track Thursday to Sunday if a race is every 2 weeks then that leaves him exactly 9 days to analyse the data, know what to do, check the simulator design and build. and that is just a single part and teams do often bring more than one part. Newey doesn't use CAD, he prefers his drawing board to test things out and i believe it is impossible for him to do the tech director part and head of aero part, each aero part goes through around 10 iterations till it reaches him he can't be doing that!

Packaging yes, direction yes, Ideas for improvement yes, design path yes, development path yes.

Design and analysis (be that part or data) impossible IMHO.

He is the brains behind RBR success, but he doesn't do everything he just does his job better than most.
