Probably never going to happen, but - like those who believed in the supposed Mayan prophesy - I like to imagine things that would likely be unpleasant to me.

Don't be too quick to think that...

When Schumi left in '06, I continued watching every race. I couldn't find another driver to support, but still enjoyed F1.

Admittedly it wasn't the same when I wasn't rooting for a particular driver, but it was (nearly) always worth watching.

You'd be silly to discount Vettel, who'll only be 30 by that time. Hamilton, too, will probably still be here. He'll still be a young 33 come 2018.

Even in 5 years, Alonso will only be 36. I'd not be surprised if he remained - he doesn't look to be slowing down at any point at the moment.

We've got such a wealth of talent on the grid right now, it's not easy to narrow it down to two. I'm going to have to expand on the list:

-) Vettel
-) Hamilton
-) Alonso
-) Ricciardo
-) Hulkenberg
-) Maldonado

In no order.

Any yet JB is 32 and Webber 36 and people expect them to retire in the near future

I think we should start a few new series for retired drivers...

- Formula 40s
- Formula 50s
- Formula OAPs

I'd like to see Frijns mixing it up with the big guys. He has won 3 back-to-back feeder series titles (F BMW, FR2.0, FR3.5) which is no small feat and therefore he should really get a quality drive in 2014.

I think he is already working for Sauber, isn't he?

He'll be their test driver in 2013, but that won't automatically get him a racing seat for 2014.

More often than not being test driver will get you very, very limited track time so that isn't really ideal to show off your skills. I do hope they'll give him track time and treat him like Williams did with Bottas, to get him ready for 2014.

F1 2017

Vettel (Ferrari) (5 times WDC)
Hulkenberg (Red Bull)
Di Resta (Merc)

3-time champion Alonso will have retired, 2-time champ Lewis will be racing in America, Kimi rallying.

Well he's in F1 already as the Sauber test driver, many believe Hulkenberg will be moving to a bigger team for 2014 and then there would be a good chance he might get promoted to the race seat

I think people have been overly critical of him, and he might silence a few doubters next season. He's generally been unlucky but put in good performances whenever he's had the opportunity. Some drivers come shooting out of the blocks like Vettel, some have to grow into the sport like Webber. I think Di Resta will get there, he just needs some better luck in 2013.

Agreed. He needs to make it happen next year; but I think he is held in high esteem among the paddock, certainly Eddie Jordan was always tipping him for a top drive. We shall see, he needs some standout drives to keep himself in the running.

Well he was doing ok up to mid season, was Eddie tipping him for a top drive at seasons end?

He certainly expressed surprise in the end of year review that Di Resta was overlooked during all the big driver changes. I think many fans of the sport have a very blinkered view of things, if a driver's not on their screen the whole race they don't pay any attention to them...Paul's just one of those drivers that gets ignored by the director, he can be quietly running a great race but because he's not banzai-ing Kobayashi style into the side of another car he doesn't get the time on camera. Team bosses and the people that matter notice when a driver puts in consistent lap times, or beats his team mate during certain sectors of the lap...that's what gets drivers noticed in the pitlane.
