With the first two launches there has not been any :o at all. Both routine evolutions. But what launches surprised you the most.

The Walrus

No Sponsors for an entire season!?

Probably the Walrus nose most. That was a bit like being hit in the face with a sledgehammer at the time. The Honda thing was predicted quite late in 06 iirc. McLaren's chrome livery was a bit out of the blue in 06 though.

Get well soon Schumi. Keep fighting as hard as we know you can. Thinking of Corinna, Gina-Maria, Mick and the rest of the Schumacher family.

The year BAR debuted with a split livery between Lucky Strikes and was the other "555"?

The Walrus nose definitely ranks at or near the top. It would be interesting to see how close or how far it came to accomplishing what they thought the design would do.

I some times think the developments that fail to achieve their design goals are more interesting than those that work, given how much time and money is put into the development that you expect them to produce some successful performance. But when that time and money goes into it and it fails (and I mean fail as in not working, rather than not keeping up with what the competition does) its refreshing to see that such bright minds still miss the mark sometimes.

I wasn't even alive for these! But I'm guessing the BT46B raised quite a few eyebrows the first time it was seen....

or the Tyrell P34......

The first reveal of the step nose was quite surprising even though it was anticipated

What about the fact that Mclaren appear to have moved to a step nose this year??? That's got to be a small surprise...

Now I'm thinking about it, the MP4-25 with it's f-duct, although iirc the f-duct wasn't fitted for the launch. And the MP4-26 with the L-shaped side-pods (which I thought looked really good!)

I was more surprised before that when they wanted a separate livery for each car.

Was the BAR one not known about before any unveil?

Memories hazy but with the FIA arguments over the separate liveries I thought it was common knowledge at least thats how I remember it   .

Macca going with the step nose and the 26's L-pods have to be up there for me.

Here is something out of memory lane:

The Modena from 22 years ago. Looks like a turtle shell.

I loved McLaren's 1997 launch - gone was the Marlboro red/white combo and in came West.

Plus the Spice Girls taking the stage - makes today's Force India launch look like a used car lot.

+1
edit: wow ... they had like hundreds of thousands of different sponsors on that car ... it's 4 only on the front wing (without the mounting pylons)

The following year's livery was better than that at least, with little blue tips to the flip-ups at the back of the sidepods.

The Walrus was the biggest surprise for me followed by last years Caterham and the Earth Car.
But the following were also alarming.

This was a system shock the first time seeing it after the blue/yellow.
Image

I didn't think anyone would see this one as a marketable colour.
Image

This one because I thought it looked exactly like the 2006 Midland
Image

And this one for its shockingly good looks!

Paul Di Resta smiled and told a joke at the 2013 Force India launch. I bet no one expected that.

To be fair I didn't expect Captain Black to be in attendance either.

I can remember loading this up on 14k modem back in early 1996, took about 2 minutes to load a picture half this size.

Head rests were a big shock back then, Ferrari misinterpreted the rules and launched an armchair.
