Thread has changed a little bit, submit your helmet designs that you have created or even your real helmet design for viewing pleasure.
There's a template here if anyone wants to give designing their own lid a go
Spoiler: show
With all the new liveries and helmets being revealed I thought it would be a good idea to start this little competition, design a helmet.

Here is a template, you don't have to use this one, but one where it shows the 4 main sides would be preferable
Image

So here are the rules

You Can:
- Design your own helmet livery
- It can be for a specific team, driver, yourself or for a completely made up team driver etc.
- Use any logos or sponsors you want
- Use any template you want or program/format to create it, this includes MS Paint and crayons and crazy 3D rendering
- Submit multiple entries

You Can't:
- Use a design that has already been created, it must be your own work
- Merge existing driver helmets together, i.e. this - https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/imag ... SHo-4Diskg

At the end of the month voting will open and the winner will be the helmet design with the most votes.

So get designing!

Great idea Spec!

I'll likely do an update of my avatar helmet. Although I don't expect it to win the competition given the reaction to purple on the RB9! :D

Hard to say at this point, while it would be good for it to continue I am doing a lot more work on weekends and after hours than what I had been the last couple of years and I'm not sure on how much attention I can give it.

I'm sure the workload escalated from 2011 to 2012 - If you need help with totting up all the values I'm sure the good people of this forum, myself included, would be happy to help do some adding up!

Sounds cool, will have a go if I get chance

some good baselines (and some bad ones) for those wanting to use 3D CAD

Just updated my 3D Studio Max to the latest version a couple of months ago. This should be a great way to play around with it to see what's changed.

Should be able to do a good job with that. What do you use 3d studio for ?

I don't use 3DS much, it just came bundled with the Autodesk Inventor upgrade at work.

I design packaging & mounting for for telemetry gear on test aircraft, and sometimes I'll use 3DS to do visualizations for presentations at design reviews, or sometimes for installation documentation. Usually though I'm not dealing with non-technical people so it's not necessary to go to that much trouble at the design review, and flat shaded renderings straight from Inventor or Mechanical Desktop are better for installation documents.

But it's still a nice toy to have around to play with from time to time. :)

I had a go today at my first ever helmet. Tried to get to grips with using GIMP (free photoshop style software) and to make sure the pattern worked at the different angles, which was very hard!

When do we upload??

Would love to be able to use it. I tried many years ago and I couldn't get on with it. Must have been to complicated for me. Lol. I have used other autodesk ones over the years did some good stuff and now im just using google sketchup

Tempted to give it a shot but I suspect Pro/ENGINEER isn't the best 3D tool for this kind of modelling...

It would probably be a satin or normal finish for the most part but the orange parts would have the shiney chrome-like finish

Well My grandad on my mums side was very proud of his Douglas heritage, hence the tartan and as its the back douglas clan (one of ours was one of Robert the Bruces men at the Battle of Bannockburn and later took RtBs heart to the holy land, so our crest has the mark of RtB's heart on it, so very historical ) so the black main colour is in deference to the fact its the BLACK douglas clan

The orange flames and logo, well, my username wen i used to play alot of PC games was Firehawk, i created the logo especially so the flames represent ..well..me (my flying/driving style reflects my name ) and the scottish flag, In the f1 2010 has a scottish helmet that looks like my design sans the orange and tartn..just another flage around the middle and I liked how it looked and on DC and Franchettis helmets too and as I'm scottish too and I like the look of it on driver cameras..i went for it

Basicly the helmet tells you exactly who I am

My first ever go at a helmet design. Was pretty hard getting all the angles correct and it's not 100% spot on but close enough

This didn't come out anywhere as near as good as I was imagining it.
In fact, it's not even what I really wanted it to look like.
I'm not good at translating my ideas into the real world.

Well here is part 1 of my design:

May still modify it, but I dont want to go too overboard and just keep it simple (even though it took several attempts to get it like this  )

Just a quick 10 minute job here. Went a little vintage because that's the mood I was in and I used an actual F1 Arai Helmet. LOL

Thanks, glad you like.

But I do have a bit of an unfair advantage in that I've been in advertising & design and the print industry for over 20 years and have been using Photoshop daily in all that time. Been wanting to paint my helmet to match my stuff but it's quite expensive and a bit difficult to get absolutely perfect and flawless so for now, I'll stick with the matching colors on my lid. LOL

Thanks for a simple and effective livery. I long to see that in modern motorsport.

Actually alof them are pretty simple and effective which really annoys me come the F1 games they vary from having the players helmet choices nice n classic (the best helmet i used in the f1 games was the f1 2010 scottish helmet) to making them more modern/motogp like when itsclear that given the choice, we prefer classic

I actualy hate the lack of consistency in the f1 games for helmet design n 2012 igtt use the mainly black one with some green in it

there should be some sort of helmet editor nothing fancy, just something to give us real choice

This. Also, create a team. You can do it with most sports games, why not F1?

Nice work on these helmets guys, i would enter but i have the artistic talent of a pineapple.
