It's as good a time as any to be nostalgic for Kimi's early years what with him returning to Sauber. I read this article from 2001 that really highlights what a battle it was to get Kimi on the grid in 2001.

Max Mosley himself opposed the hiring and Dietrich Mateschitz of Sauber's main sponser Red Bull (whatever happened to them?) thought that Enrique Bernoldi of the Red Bull junior team was a better bet. It's fair to say that Red Bull's talent spotting has improved since.

Loosely related but it did jump out at me that less than 20 years ago one of the financially poorer teams on the grid could pick two drivers based on nothing but driving talent.

That is not to say that they didn't have any backing whatsoever though. But I take your point, it seemed easier back then.

What gets me is why would Mosley have ANY saying on which driver a team hires? Unless there are some serious grounds for opposing it, e.g. the driver is a convicted felon or 12 years old (!!), or whatever.

It was in regards to Kimi's lack of experience. Coming straight from formula Renault he was felt to inexperienced to be given a super licence.

Ah, thanks, I will admit I did not read the article, as I am at work.
