They just shortened testing time until next Monday, which means that Lotus and probably also Marussia and HRT won't be able to get any more tests before Australia.

No, they didn't change the rules. The rules are clear - you cannot test on the week preceding the race. Therefore, the teams cannot test on Monday.

Ferrari and Red Bull attempted to change their testing dates to give up one of their test days scheduled for 1st to 4th of March, and use Monday, 5th of March as one test day. The FIA has issued a directive that only those four test days are to be used.

It all started when Mercedes gave up one test day and were granted one private test day. Then Renault have a problem with their chassis, pulled out of testing, and are seeking approval from other teams to be allowed a private test to make up for lost time, something out of their control. Now, Red Bull and Ferrari are trying to get in a private test day, I assume, to try out secret parts they wish to keep from the prying eyes of others. Nice try, but you have to play by the rules.

I'd love to have private testing days back in F1 for good, though. We'd see probably more innovation, less similar cars and more surprises.

Mercedes really rocked with their decision for private testing. Brawn still proving he is the best when it comes to strategy.

They still tested less than other teams.

Time will tell if it was indeed to hide a innovation.
