I stumbled over this article about drivers missing from the F1 grid by the beginning of the 2013-season:

http://www.gpupdate.net/en/f1-news/2915 ... e-f1-grid/

I wasn't aware that one third of the grid had been replaced before this season. If the same happens before 2014 quite a lot of familiar names will be looking for a new job next year.

I think Kovalainen, Petrov, Kobayashi and Glock would do just as well as most of the current midfield drivers, but except for Kovalainen I don't see much chance of any of them returning in 2014. So maybe an exit from Formula 1 today is close to being permanent.

Heikki Kovalainen - doing FP1 for Caterham and could return next year
Michael Schumacher - don't want to return
Kamui Kobayashi - tried to find the money to buy his way back, but didn't succeed
Bruno Senna - not good enough
Vitaly Petrov - his hope was to be the russian driver in Formula 1, but Sorotkins contract with Sauber next year killed that hope
Pedro de la Rosa - too old
Narain Karthikeyan - too old and not good enough
Timo Glock - not much hope from a current position as number 16 in the german DTM
