I am going to have a glance at some of the top drivers moving between teams and seeing how they fared in there first year versus there second year. I am only going to look at cases where their team mate remained the same for both years and that team mate was established in the team before they arrived. Basically, does having input into a car and getting used to a team give much performance?

Kimi Raikkonen
2002/2003. Beaten by DC overall in 2002, along way ahead of DC in 2003 and 2004.

2007/2008. Slightly better than Massa in 2007, fell behind Massa in 2008

Fernando Alonso
2003/2004. Not a good example as Alonso done a full year of testing testing at Renault so Trulli did not have much advantage by being established. If anything Fernando was better in 2003 than 2004.

2010/2011. Massa was definitely closer to Alonso in the first half of 2010 than any other time.

Seb Vettel
2009/2010. Not a great example as he moved at the beginning of complete new set of rules and move to slick tyres so Webbers advantage of being established with the car is not too much value to him. Gap was similar in both 2009 and 2010, although I would say a slight Vettel improvement for 2010.

Jenson Button
2010/2011. Jenson only beat Hamilton in mixed conditions in 2010, 2011 he beat he numerous times fair and square. Definite improvement for Jenson.

Lewis Hamilton
2013/2014. The big question mark for next season?

I think the general pattern holds that there is a improvement in the second year, the big exception being Kimi and Ferrari in 2008.
