I do hope they retire numbers of very successful or popular drivers, or those (and hopefully there are none) whose careers are ended by injury/accident.

In Equestrian sport, horse names are retired - new registrations cannot have the same or close variant name of previously very successful horses. Seems to work well.

I do think its a shame they aren't starting with 3 digit numbers from the get-go, and retroactively assigning two digit numbers to retired drivers based on their first WDC year

It would be quite original if any of the drivers picked a non-natural number, i.e. 3.7, -2 or π.

Actually I tried looking it up in the sporting regs but can't find anything that would outlaw this :)
As far as I can see there's only mention of "numbers".

Well, at least a negative number would not be allowed. I believe the rules state the driver number must be between 2-99

Ferrari drivers could use Roman numerals.

XXVII and XXVIII would be good......

I'd request number 2, then confuse every body by showing up at the first race with big 10 on my car and helmet.

I think they should use numbers from 1 to 22 (including 13). I see no reason to go beyond numbers that are above the amount of competitors.
In soccer they do not skip number 13 at world cup events for example.

In football (soccer) they can choose any 2 numbered number they want for almost all events (although they are stuck with that number for the duration of the events). Many players stick with a high number they've come across in a younger part of their career.

A wider range of numbers allows for drivers like Kimi, Schumacher and Grosjean returning to the sport after an absence without having to register another number.

I would love 98xxxxxxx3 as my car number. It's unique & my mobile number.

That way sponsors could call me quicker.

Not in world or European cups for national teams I think, or not when I last checked it. It doesn't matter which number a player picks as long as number 1 is allocated to a goalkeeper and all numbers from 1 to 23 (dunno how big squads can be nowadays?) are used.

I don't see what is so fun or cool about having a lucky number, I have none. I do have a few colours I like but a number is too impersonal to me. But that's just me.

Unsure about World Cups (don't happen often enough for me to notice) but European Cup / Champions League has the same stipulation as F1 - #1 doesn't need to be used but can be used by 1 person (for F1 = Champ, Football = Goalkeeper), everyone else must select any number fro 2-99.

Looks like Bianchi will be 27, then. He doesn't stand a chance of 7 or 77 as they are first choices for other drivers ahead of him.

true, although I didn't see anyone in the list above claiming them. If a driver doesn't have a specific request I guess they just get a random number?

It's reserved for the reigning WDC, who can choose to drive with it that year or, alternatively, his own driver number.

According to this article Kevin Magnussen already knows what his number will be.

Quote:
"Here's some news: my driver number will be 20 this year, which I won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series title with last year," the 21-year-old said.

Anybody know when the numbers will be released to the public?

Who came up with 5 for Vettel?
Maybe it'll be 15? http://www.redbull.com/en/motorsports/f ... 14-preview

JB just tweeted that he will be using 22 because of 2009.

Doesn't seem to be a known reason but it definitely holds some prominence to him. The Monaco helmet had the ball on 44 but also had dice on the back which were positioned to look like 44.

I believe it was his karting number. Could be wrong though.

So obviously the FIA has the definitive list (at least for the drivers that are contracted). I wonder when they'll make the list public.
