As many may be aware, earlier today Micheal Schumacher was taken to hospital after a skiiing accident. It is reported that he fell while skiing off piste and struck his head on a rock. He is also reported to have been wearing a helmet at the time. He was airlifted off the mountain and flown to hospital.

Various news outlets are quoting the hospital in Grenoble France that the 44 year old suffered a 'serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation'.

There will be a statement released at 10 am GMT tomorrow.

From the recent press conference -

Schumacher 'very agitated on arrival and placed into induced coma before beng operated on to relieve pressure on his brain'.
He will be kept in the coma for the time being.
The hospital staff state it's too early to make any prognosis.
Schumacher confirmed to have been wearing a helmet and the hospital added that had he not been wearing it, he would not have survived.
No second operation and 'at this moment' no second op is scheduled.

Hartstein's take on the PC, since so many were championing his interpretations and he certainly knows what he's on about:

31/12/2013 CONFERENCE:

"Slight improvement" after overnight surgery, with hourly checks to continue with damage to both sides of the brain. Not yet out of danger but "more under control". However things can go either way "very quickly". "We can still say the situation is a critical one".

The family is still there, very much involved in proceedings. No forecasts can be made at this stage. In terms of next actions there are anomalies that need attention.

"We wont give press conferences when nothing changes, so we can't guarantee DAILY press conferences"

It's reported by BILD that while there will not be another 10 am GMT press conference, Schumachers manager will release an update.

Quite a simple statement by his management today. There has been no change in his condition since the last press conference.

Statement given to various news media from Sabine Kehm.

-Michael's condition remains critical but stable. We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation.
-the family cares only for Michaels health.
-Michael's helmet camera was voluntarily given to the investigating authorities by the family. That this should have been done against the wishes of the family is untrue.
- we ask you to respect the continued privacy of the family.
- In consultation with the doctor's treating Michaels, it is not expected that there will be any press conference before Monday.

French police have revealed that Schumacher's helmet camera shows he 'lost his balance' and struck a rock in what they called 'Virgin Territory' which was not part of the properly marked. Investigators are still determining if he could be classed as 'off piste' under French Law.

The rumours that he was going to the aid of a relative at the time of the accident, were not confirmed, nor was the speed he was travelling at the time of the accident. Earlier reports of issues with his rented ski's have also been ruled out by the video.

While this is not a news update for Schumacher, it's come to my attention that there is a fake link being offered around twitter (and probably elsewhere) claiming to be the leaked schumacher helmet camera video.

In reality this is a virus that allows hackers open access to the users computer. Obviously, don't open any links claiming to be the accident video.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/jan/17/michael-schumacher-condition-stable-manager

Quote:
Michael Schumacher's manager says the former Formula One champion remains in stable condition following a skiing accident that left him with severe head injuries and in a coma since 29 December.

The statement from manager Sabine Kehm does not mention the word "critical" for the first time since describing the seven-time champion's condition.

Schumacher has been in an induced coma in a Grenoble hospital since the crash in the French Alps.

Kehm says: "Michael's family is very happy and confident with the work of the team of doctors treating Michael, and they trust them completely. Michael's condition is still considered stable."

Quote:
We are deeply touched by all the messages to get well soon for Michael which still are being sent. That gives up strength. Thank you all so much! Thank you to the fan club in Kerpen, to 1. Despite recently stating otherwise, Schumachers manager has today announced that they are beginning the long process of waking Schumacher from his coma.

'Michael's sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking-up process, which may take a long time.

For the protection of the family, it was originally agreed by the interested parties to communicate this information only once this process was consolidated.

The family of Michael Schumacher is again requesting for their privacy, and the medical secret, to be respected, and to not disturb the doctors treating Michael in their work.

At the same time, the family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the sympathy they have received from around the world.'

New statement from Sabine Kehm.

Quote:
Michael's family would like to again express their sincere thanks for the continuous sympathy coming from all over the world. The good wishes they receive help the family and, we are convinced they also help Michael, who still is in a waking up process.

As often in such situation no day is like the next. The family is thankful for one's understanding that they would not wish to disclose medical details in order to protect Michael's privacy. As assured from the beginning we will continue to communicate any decisive new information on Michael's health state. We are aware that the wake up phase can take a long time.

The family continues to strongly believe in Michael's recovery and place all their trust in the doctors', nurses' and nursing auxiliaries' team. The important thing is not the speed of the recovery but that Michael's heal process progresses in a continuous and controlled way.

A full statement being reported today from Sabine Kehm.

Micheal is making progress on his way. He shows moments of consciousness and awakening. We are on his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident.

We would like to thank you all for your continuous sympathies. At this time we ask again for understanding that we do not intend to disclose details. This is necessary to protect the privacy of Michael and his family and to enable the medical team to work in full calmness.

There are a number of claims this evening that someone has stolen documents from Grenoble hospital and are attempting to sell them to any news media outlet that wants to buy them.

Michael's manager has released a statement.

"For several days stolen documents and data are being offered for sale. The offer or claims them to be the medical file of Michael Schumacher.

We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. The theft has been reported. The authorities are involved.

We expressly advise that both the purchase and the publication of such documents and data is forbidden. The contents of any medical files are totally private and confidential and must not be made available to the public.

We will therefore, in every single case, press for criminal charges and damages against any publication of the content or reference to the medical file.

We trust for your understanding."

News has just broken from his management that Michael will be leaving hospital to continue his recovery at home. The statement from Sabine Kehm is as follows.

'Henceforth, Michael's rehabilitation will take place at his home. Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work. We ask that the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that the speculations about his state of health are avoided.'

EDIT- my apologies, it appears that the report regarding comments made by Schumacher's son was not accurate. It's been stated by BILD that the quotes given were never said.

Quote:
Manager Schumacher: "His condition is improving"

Michael Schumacher's manager says the condition of the seven time world champion is "improving". Sabine Kehm, who is now guiding Schumacher's son Mick on his first steps in single seaters, appeared in the Barcelona paddock ahead of the Spanish grand prix.

When asked about the mostly unknown fate of F1's most successful driver ever, she was quoted by Sky Italia: "There are small improvements, but the road is still very long."

The latest news about 46-year-old former Ferrari and Mercedes driver Schumacher is that his wife Corinna has sold his private jet and favourite holiday home in Norway. The usually well-connected German weekly Bunte claims she made the decision "When it became clear that the old Schumi perhaps would never return".

Now, the world is closely watching the early development of Schumacher's successor, his 16-year-old son Mick.

Toro Rosso star Carlos Sainz, another son of a famous father, sympathises with motor racing's latest 'junior'.

"The truth is that it hurt me," he told France's L'Equipe when asked what having a famous father was like as he rose through the ranks.

"At the track, all of my competitors dreamed of beating the son of Carlos Sainz. I imagine it is the same for Schumacher's son now.

"These are difficult moments for him because he is still a child. But in the end it was a good thing for me," Sainz added, "because it made me stronger."

A court case in Germany has revealed some upsetting news regarding Michael's current condition.

A lawyer for Michael Schumacher has told a court in Germany that the former Formula 1 world champion "cannot walk" following his skiing injury.

Felix Damm was detailing the extent of Schumacher's injuries in a lawsuit against German magazine, Bunte.
