Righto. As some of you may (and most probably wont) know, i've been having a bit of a fiddle with the way the forums look recently, you can find my progress up to now somewhat documented in the Feedback Topic at the top of the F1 and Motorsport forum. I'll be posting all discussion, updates and releases I make into this topic from now on, cos I think i'm cluttering up that topic a bit too much with something that doesn't have much scope with the users here.

What are you talking about, and why would I be interested?

Good question. The way the forum looks is dependent on 'stylesheets' to dictate to your browser how to render the page. Using an extension to your browser (IE users are in a bit of bother here, but more on that later) you can alter those stylesheets to make websites look however you want them to... up to a point. You cant alter the basic markup of the page itself so you are basically dressing it up a different way but with the same bones underneath. Why would you be interested? The default style here, while functional, is a bit of an eyesore after a while and far too bright for my liking, especially when browsing in low light conditions, which was my original reason for starting this little project.... But who doesn't like the idea of the forums being customised to a style of their liking? Ferrari fan? Have tons of red and a big prancing horse in the background! Got a thing for neon pink? You're insane, but that can be accommodated too. Using some pretty advanced CSS, you'd be surprised just how much you can alter when it comes to the way this place looks.

Right, you have my interest.... where do I start?

Right now, i'm releasing stylesheets specifically for an extension called 'Stylish', which can be found on both the Firefox and Chrome add-ons list. I'm told that there is a version of Stylish that runs on Opera too, so that should cover the majority of desktop based browsers. Internet Explorer on the other hand, as ever, is the awkward one and as of writing this, i've only heard of something called TrixIE that purports to mimic the kind of ability that Stylish presents as an add-on, and as such, Internet Explorer wont be officially supported by me (though if anyone else fancies trying to port my work to work on IE, be my guest).

Stylish for Chrome can be found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe?hl=en

Stylish for Firefox can be found here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/firefox/addon/stylish/

Stylish for Opera can be found here https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/stylish/

So i've installed 'Stylish'.... what now?

Once you have installed the add-on, there should now be a square with an 'S' on it on the right hand side of the top bar of your browser. Click it. If not, going to Tools>Add-Ons (in FF, I imagine the process is similar in the other browsers) and selecting stylish in there will lead you to a similar menu. The next thing you want to click on is 'write new style', and then, 'black style'. This should open up a new browser window with a black text input with 'save' and 'preview' and some other buttons at the top. It is in this blank area where you want to copy and paste my stylesheet code, links to which will be provided at the bottom of this post. Once you've pasted your chosen stylesheet into the text-area, give the style a name in the box at the top and then click the save button... (Chrome and Opera users, before you click save, underneath the text area you just pasted the code into, there should be a drop down list that says 'Applies to', click on that and select 'URLs on this domain' and then in the box next to it, type 'forum.planet-f1.com') and voila! The forums' look should have changed immediately. You can change stylesheets or turn them off entirely using that same 'S' button at the top of your browser.

....so come on then, what styles have you got for me?

...as of writing, only 1 that i'd consider remotely servicable(i'm using it), and one other that is very much a beta test and a work in progress, however i'm putting this out here now in order to hopefully drum up some support for this project and ultimately get feedback on what people would like to see (if anything at all) and eventually, get people to request certain styles and see if I can come up with something serviceable.

Firefox Stylesheets:

Flash's Default Stylesheet

Known Bugs:

Disabling the icons to the left hand side of the topic list has also disabled the list of smileys and the font colour picker on the full post page

Williams FW17 Stylesheet

Known Bugs:

It doesn't look great yet, real rough draft, background img is hosted on my server so if that goes down so does the background.

Chrome/Opera Stylesheets:

Flash's Default Stylesheet

Known Bugs:

Disabling the icons to the left hand side of the topic list has also disabled the list of smileys and the font colour picker on the full post page.

Strange transparency issue on every other post on message list, seems to be double stacking the transparent backgrounds.

To be honest the entire forum is dead at the moment, especially the off topic section.

I attempted to do this as I really like the idea, but I only ever browse the forum on my phone now and I cannot for the life of me work out how to get stylish to work on Chrome for IOS. So I gave up, I'll have to remember to do this the next time I look on the forum on my desktop, whenever that may be!
