I will also use a joker, the second of the season on Hulkenberg.

Let's see if he will bring the points in this time...

Both noted  Any others need to be posted in this thread by 9am GMT on Friday (44 hours and 30 minutes from now for those in a different timezone).

I'll use a joker on Nico Rosberg this weekend. With my luck in this game, his winning streak will now end in a spectacular fashion, but I can but try! Hopefully it'll either work out or gift the win to Ferrari due to Rosberg's misfortune. :-P

Fortune favours the brave! Although I've pretty much picked Hamilton to win in every prediction I've made this weekend, so I'd be quite okay with that not working out for you ;)

Spanish Grand Prix update

Well, thanks a bunch, Mercedes. Now I have to write an entirely new opening paragraph! Although I could leave in the part where Ferrari failed to maximise their result as, despite looking like they might've been quicker, the Prancing Horses' failure to deliver on Saturday left them behind both Red Bulls. With strategy not favouring Sebastian Vettel or former teammate Daniel Ricciardo, it was left to Kimi Raikkonen to duke it out for the victory with someone who's young enough to be his son. Despite being just 18 years old (you may not have known that, though, as I don't think it has been mentioned anywhere in the last 24 hours...) Verstappen drove like he'd been in that position a hundred times, taking a shock victory and ensuring we have a very, very different set of results to normal.

Image
The champagne moment

While the smile on the faces of everyone associated with Red Bull was pretty huge as Lewis and Nico disappeared into the gravel, from a Group Pick'em perspective, nobody could've been happier with that than Remmirath. Their bold decision to pick Vettel over either Mercedes driver, and their even bolder decision to go against the grain and plump for Ferrari rather than Mercedes, really hadn't worked out in the first four rounds of the season. But boy, did it ever pay off in Spain! Even with Vettel only managing third, and Ferrari themselves failing to beat Red Bull to the top step of the podium, it gave Remmirath an immediate 48 point advantage over everyone except TypingChicane (the only other entrant to select Vettel). It proved to be more than enough to register a maiden victory, scoring 123 points to romp to the win by a season-high 44 points. It wasn't all good news for Remmirath who did deploy their joker on Nico Rosberg, but the bottom line is had that decision been successful, then they probably wouldn't have been celebrating the round victory. Every cloud, and all that!

Nobody else managed to make it into triple figures, with Herb claiming their first podium finish of the year, albeit only picking up 79 points in the process. Third, and on the podium for the fourth time in five races, is Championship leader TypingChicane, who finished just two points further back with 77 for the round.

Remmirath - 123
Herb - 79
TypingChicane - 77

Image
Because we can't all be winners

This probably won't come as much of a surprise given the double Merc DNF, but it was an incredibly low scoring round. The average score amongst the field was a mere 59.53 points, the lowest of the season so far (89.53, 91.93, 74.6 and 102.6 were the averages for the first four races). With the exception of Remmirath, the rest of us managed to record our worst score of the campaign to this point. Outside of the top three, Hamilton_Jar just missed out on the podium with a score of 73, closely followed by Black_Flag_11 with 71. Neither entrant has made the podium yet this season, an unwanted record they continue to share with Fountoukos13, Coulthard's Chin and theferret. After the top five things get really grim; nobody else managed more than 58 points, and the rest of the field ranged from the aforementioned amount down to a measly 48 points. With such embarrassing scores I'm not going to name names, but if you haven't been mentioned yet and really want to know how badly you did...

Hamilton_Jar - 73
Black_Flag_11 - 71
Icemanjee1 - 58
Schumacher forever#1 - 56
Exediron and Jenson's Understeer - 54
Coulthard's Chin, Fountoukos13, Jezza13 and theferret - 50
Mayhem - 48

Jokers update

We had the biggest array of jokers deployed in Barcelona as Remmirath (Rosberg), Fountoukos13 (Hulkenberg) and Coulthard's Chin (Alonso) all went for it. As you can see by the drivers mentioned, it didn't exactly go well for any of the three as none of the joker selections even made it to the chequered flag. So far four of the six joker selections have failed to score, so they have certainly been more hit than miss this year.

Jenson's Understeer - Driver Group 1 joker on Rosberg in China - 25 points
Exediron - Driver Group 1 joker on Vettel in China - 18 points
Fountoukos13 - Driver Group 4 joker on Hulkenberg in Spain and Driver Group 6 joker on Nasr in Australia - 0 points
Remmirath - Driver Group 1 joker on Rosberg in Spain - 0 points
Coulthard's Chin - Driver Group 5 joker on Alonso in Spain - 0 points

Fountoukos13 is the only entrant to have used multiple jokers whilst four of us have dipped our toes into the water once. The rest of the field still have all six jokers remaining.

Image
Spare a thought for...

Had Remmirath not won, being the first person to use their Driver Group 1 joker and score no points would've warranted strong consideration for this section. But for this race they can take the plaudits and escape this part of the post, at least until the next Mercedes 1-2! Having set a new worst score for the season, Mayhem gets the, ahem, honour this time around. 48 points will surely take some beating; considering all bar Remmirath selected Mercedes a 1-2 for the Silver Arrows alone would pretty much eclipse that total in most races!

Overall standings after Spain

TypingChicane - 510
Jenson’s Understeer - 474
Icemanjee1 - 468
Exediron and Jezza13 - 467
Herb - 460
Hamilton_Jar - 458
Schumacher forever#1 - 453
Fountoukos13 and theferret - 429
Remmirath - 423
Black_Flag_11 - 422
Mayhem - 421
Coulthard’s Chin - 393

Having seen their lead eaten into a little, TypingChicane has managed to expertly navigate such a low-scoring round and actually extends it back up to 36 points. I guess four podiums in five races will have that kind of impact! Jenson's Understeer remains second but Icemanjee1 nows slots into third, albeit only one point ahead of both Exediron and Jezza13. Herb's second place lifts them above Hamilton_Jar and Schumacher forever#1, as well as ensuring second through to eighth are separated by a mere 21 points. Fountoukos13's attempts at gaining some separation from theferret by way of a joker deployment have again failed, leaving the two identical entries married together on 429 points. And look who that is sitting comfortably in the midtable (or at least at the bottom of it!); Remmirath's 123 point victory hauling them up above both Black_Flag_11 and Mayhem. Coulthard's Chin now props up the table as the only entrant yet to break the 400-point barrier.

Monaco is up next. Will we see more misery for Mercedes and, most likely, another victory for Remmirath? Can TypingChicane make it five podiums from six races and further extend their lead, or will the rest of the pack close back up? And can Fountoukos13 curse a third driver with a joker selection?!

All right, a win -- and finally some space from being dead last! Not quite the ideal way it would've happened, but I'll celebrate this probably once-in-a-season event nonetheless. :D

Too bad I don't get extra points for that one. I guess I'll have to be doubly careful about using my next joker...

I'm thinking strongly of using a joker in Monaco to try and close the gap to Jenson's Understeer once more. As one of only two people whose joker has actually scored well, I'm feeling high on my own success! ;)

Was a bit peeved that I lost Verstappen to be replaced with a demoralized Kvyat. Fortunately, I still got his massive 25 points from choosing Red Bull. :o

However, if you had also selected Kvyat then you would receive any points Verstappen scored at Red Bull by way of him being Kvyat's replacement.

I see you're well ahead of your time, Jenson's Understeer!

Edit: Reading back through the posts now, it seems I'm well behind other people myself! :uhoh:

Joker on Alonso this race please! High risk, high reward!

I probably won't get to write-up the results for Monaco until Wednesday so I'll just give you this little teaser: the round was won with the highest score in this game's short history and we have a new overall leader.

Hey, no fun ! I'm sure you do realise, Jenson's Understeer, that I now have to find a way to strip you from the leadership in the Oracle competition too?

It might be the race with the least interesting flag design all season (seriously, with all the money floating around there, you'd think they could afford a re-design) but thankfully the race itself was a lot more interesting, featuring two hours of tension, action, and hilariously optimistic overtaking attempts. Fortunately not every driver attempted to pay tribute to the late Jules Bianchi by trying to replicate his 2014 overtake on KK, leaving enough cars running to give us a result.

Image
The champagne moment

...and what a result. Despite Monaco generally being known as the track most likely to produce surprise results, it was actually the highest-scoring round of the season. No fewer than eight entrants set personal bests for the year as we saw TypingChicane's record of 140 points destroyed quicker than Jolyon Palmer's Renault after visiting a wet zebra crossing. Who grabbed that record? None other than Herb, who after a second place finish last time out in Spain has managed to go one better and record their first victory of the season. Remarkably, it gives us our sixth different winner in six races. After a season without a podium, Fountoukos13 broke their duck and finished a very strong second. They might even feel a little unlucky knowing that their 141 point haul would've been the best for the season had Herb not already beaten it. Closing out the podium we had a share of the spoils; Hamilton_Jar recording by far and away their best result with 133 to taste the champagne for the first time, joining Schumacher forever#1, who takes their third podium from the opening six rounds.

Herb - 158
Fountoukos13 - 141
Hamilton_Jar and Schumacher forever#1 - 133

Herb's winning team: Hamilton; Raikkonen; Ricciardo; Perez; Alonso; Magnussen; Palmer; Mercedes; Red Bull; Force India; Renault (plus a Ricciardo joker)

Because we can't all be winners

Indeed, so strong was the scoring this round that previous championship leader TypingChicane's 106 points were only good enough for tenth overall. While their was a little gap between the podium and the rest, Mayhem finished fourth with 123 points. It's been an inconsistent season so far as three 100+ scores (including two second places) have been let down by two scores of under 60 points, including the current lowest on the year of just 48. In fifth, just a point removed from Mayhem, was theferret, for whom 122 points just eclipses a previous best of 120. However, they remain one of the only two competitors yet to take a podium. The other, Black_Flag_11, finished ninth for the round, below Jezza13 and Coulthard's Chin. The lowest scorer of the round? I don't think anybody wants me to waste my time highlighting that...

Mayhem - 123
theferret - 122
Jezza13 - 116
Coulthard's Chin - 115
Black_Flag_11 - 110
TypingChicane - 106
Remmirath - 97
Icemanjee1 - 96
Exediron - 93
Jenson's Understeer - 89

Jokers update

After only six jokers were utilised in the first five races, we had a sudden explosion of them here in Monaco. Five participants used one and all drew some kind of benefit from them. Fountoukos13 was the biggest beneficiary, wisely selecting Hamilton and claiming an extra 25 points. It would've been enough to reach victory lane had it not been for the fact that Herb used a joker as well, picking Daniel Ricciardo and scoring an extra 18 points. Had Red Bull decided to get his tyres ready then it would've been even better but unlike the Aussie, Herb still got to enjoy victory. Schumacher forever#1 went with Alonso and may well have cashed in on McLaren's best points haul of the season, with perhaps only Hungary offering another opportunity for such a big Group 5 bonus. Again, it was enough to make a difference and claim a podium. Also using jokers were Exediron, whose four additional points from Carlos Sainz helped avoid a (joint) last place finish for the round, as well as theferret. However, unlike the other four, theferret will probably come away feeling disappointed; having used their Group 1 joker on Nico Rosberg, they then watched as Rosberg struggled to a seventh place finish, resulting in a mere six bonus points.

Jenson's Understeer - G1 joker on Rosberg in China - 25 points
Fountoukos13 - G1 joker on Hamilton in Monaco, G4 joker on Hulkenberg in Spain and G6 joker on Nasr in Australia - 25 points
Exediron - G1 joker on Vettel in China and G4 joker on Sainz in Monaco - 22 points
Herb - G3 joker on Ricciardo in Monaco - 18 points
Schumacher forever#1 - G5 joker on Alonso in Monaco - 10 points
Remmirath - Driver Group 1 joker on Rosberg in Spain - 0 points
Coulthard's Chin - Driver Group 5 joker on Alonso in Spain - 0 points

Mayhem, Icemanjee1, Jezza13, Black_Flag_11, TypingChicane and Hamilton_Jar are all yet to use any jokers.

Image
Spare a thought for...

How about Fountoukos13, beating the highest score of the season so far but still not winning the race? Or perhaps theferret for using a joker on Nico Rosberg? Or now former leader TypingChicane? It most definitely wasn't Jenson's Understeer who finished last in a round for the first time this season. Absolutely not...

Overall standings after Monaco

Herb - 618
TypingChicane - 616
Hamilton_Jar - 591
Schumacher forever#1 - 586
Jezza13 - 583
Fountoukos13 - 570
Icemanjee1 - 564
Jenson’s Understeer - 563
Exediron - 560
theferret - 551
Mayhem - 544
Black_Flag_11 - 532
Remmirath - 520
Coulthard’s Chin - 508

What a difference a race makes. For the first time since Australia we come away from a race weekend with someone other than TypingChicane leading. Having scored massively, it's Herb who jumps up all the way from fifth to take the overall lead by just two points. The front two both cross the 600-point barrier at the expense of the rest of us, but having seen Herb overhaul a 50-point gap in one race there is still a long, long way left to go. Hamilton_Jar rises up from sixth to third, dragging Schumacher forever#1 along with them from seventh to fourth. Jezza13 remains in the top five but in a round where the order has been shaken up significantly it's Fountoukos13 who moves up to sixth.

Icemanjee1 is the first of the big fallers, dropping from third to seventh, but it's Jenson's Understeer who is the big loser this round, falling from second right the way down to eighth. Exediron is another to plummet down the order as the high scoring round catches out those who didn't do so well. At the bottom, Coulthard's Chin does close the gap to the pack with Remmirath falling below Mayhem and Black_Flag_11.

Canada next, a week and a half from now. With jokers becoming increasingly more frequent - and playing a significant part in the race results - are we going to see another spate of them used as the F1 circus heads to North America? Will our little game see a seventh different winner from the opening seven rounds or will Canada give us our first repeat victor?

Damn I actually thought I had the win in the bag with four of the top 5 runners picked! Fair play to Herb, that's an insane score!

I'm very much looking forward to somehow scoring -17 with my Canada predictions

Finally a proper use of a joker. That gives me the edge over Theferret with whom i had identical picks.

Hopefully i can catch up to the leaders over the next few rounds...

In an attempt to make up for my very poor position with bold strategy, and hopefully continue not being dead last, I'd like to use my group two joker on Valtteri Bottas for Canada. (Now watch him bin it in the wall on the opening lap... :uhoh:)

Just a thought. Raikkonen might win a race this year while for Bottas even a podium looks hard why not go that route?

Raikkonen's already my main pick for that slot, so if he does win a race (knock on wood and all that) I'll be getting the points for it no matter what. My theory is that it's better to get a chance of points from two different drivers in the group than double up on one. It could very well be that's not actually the best strategy, but I'll find out! It at least seems more likely to get some good result -- although, of course, the other way would have the potential to make an already good result much better.

It could go either way. Kimi could end up winning the race and then, even if Bottas finished second, you'd still lose points. Alternatively Kimi could have a DNF and Valtteri finishes with some decent points and you're better off than you would've been. Or they could renew their hostilities from last year and you're screwed either way!

I'm definitely hoping it's not that last one!

I'm so far back at this point (and another Mercedes double DNF is about the only way I could realistically gain much) that I'm mostly just playing around with strategy and seeing what works and how things play out. It's a development year. We expect to have a stronger package next season. :P

All being well, I fully intend to bring this game back next year, ideally a little earlier in the year so we get a few more people signing up. One of my main goals for it next year is to try and diversify people's picks a little, even if that is as simple as having one fewer driver group. Of course, the issue there is trying to balance out the groups in a way that all the choices in each group are worth considering. Kvyat and Ricciardo as the only two in group three was probably the only misstep this year; in hindsight perhaps they should've both been in group two along with Raikkonen/Bottas/Massa.

ROSBERG! I knew whenever I'd show faith in him, he'd let me down. In pick10, the first time I put him ahead of Hamilton was Spain...and now this.

Oh well. Here goes - Canada joker on Bottas!
