This has been a bad year for former champions; you're the only Top Three individual champion in the field, but the two championship teams are getting whacked pretty badly as well - as I should know! x(

2017 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

In a round where Lewis Hamilton was saddled with a widely known 5-spot grid penalty, it was generally anticipated that he wouldn't win the race. That proved to be true, although 76% of all entrants still had enough belief in Mercedes power to expect him to reach the podium anyway. This turned out to be a false belief, as it did for the 70% who expected Vettel to be able to pick up the win on a rare day when he didn't have to deal with #44 at the front.

Four entrants correctly predicted that it would be the other Silver Arrow driven by Valtteri Bottas who would claim top honors, and three of those also foresaw that the Scuderia's lead driver would follow him home in second. But only one contestant took the time to look at a man with four consecutive podium finishes, and though that he might possibly snatch a fifth here on home turf. And so it turned out, giving Bentrovato not only his first win of the year, but also his first Perfect Podium of the the 2017 season!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Place - 14 points
Bentrovato

Second Place - 8 points
Herb, mcdo

Third Place - 5 points
Jezza13

The Rest - 0 points
Everybody else except for Ruste13

Did Not Start
Ruste13

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only four entrants scoring any points, there obviously wasn't much movement this round - but the ones who did score profited immensely as a result:

Bentrovato, the Perfect Podium scorer, rocketed from 17th to 8th, single-handily taking himself from the status of backmarker to that of midfielder; mcdo and Herb ride their 8-point rounds into 1st and 2nd in the championship, respectively, while Jezza13 - scoring only 5 points - moves up a single place, since two of the contestants ahead of him are among the three who outscored him this round.

With nine rounds down, the individual championship picture therefore looks like this:

Individual Standings - Round Nine

1. mcdo --- 42 Points
2. Herb -- 39 Points
3. TheDamus --- 37 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
4. Icemanjee1 --- 37 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
5. TypingChicane --- 36 Points
6. Jezza13 --- 34 Points
7. Black_Flag_11 --- 31 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 3 Wins)
8. Bentrovato --- 31 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 1 Win)
9. Exediron --- 27 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
10. Mayhem --- 27 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
11. Remmirath --- 25 Points
12. Jenson's Understeer --- 24 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 1 Win)
13. Ruste13 --- 24 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 0 Wins)
14. cm97 --- 22 Points
15. Fountoukos13 --- 21 Points
16. theferret --- 21 Points
17. Lotus49 --- 20 Points
18. robins13 --- 14 Points

In the team standings, it's a huge win for Jalopy Racing, who score points with both drivers for a total of 13; they take the lead in the championship, and instantly extend it to an 11-point gap to the closest teams behind. McLotus advances to third (tied on points with Drive Sauber) on the strength of mcdo's score, and - no longer at the back! - Massa Attack moves forward two places with Bentrovato's Perfect Podium, demoting the struggling 2015 champions No Limit Excedrin Racing as a result.

Team Standings - Round Nine

1. Jalopy Racing (Herb & Jezza13) --- 73 Points
2. Drive Sauber (Remmirath & TheDamus) --- 62 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 5 Wins)
3. McLotus (Lotus49 & mcdo) --- 62 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 4 Wins)
4. Bernie's Bwoah (Icemanjee1 & cm97) --- 59 Points
5. Mind Your Manors (Black_Flag_11 & Fountoukos13) --- 52 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 4 Wins)
6. Massa Attack (theferret & Bentrovato) --- 52 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 2 Wins)
7. No Limit Excedrin Racing (Exediron & Jenson's Understeer) --- 51 Points
8. Sand Bag'n (robins13 & Mayhem) --- 41 Points

This unpredictable season continues to deliver a low scoring rate for our competition, and as we've seen today, a single good result can catapult any one of almost half the field into the lead. With the UK coming up fast, and rumors circling about the strength of Ferrari's engine upgrade, who will be bold enough to claim victory at what might quite possibly be Silverstone's last Formula One race?

And will people finally start putting Daniel Ricciardo on the podium? :D

Unlucky but still very good.

I'm having a total nightmare. Convinced it was going to rain so ruled out Bottas, didn't think Max's bad luck would continue or Lewis would get held up in the wet.

Stayed dry. :uhoh:

Nice write up on the Austria report! I am still beaming from nailing that perfect podium :-P

From backmarker to midfield. I just wanted to do my part for team Massa Attack and move up the ladder in the battle for those coveted constructors points.

Ok, I'll have a word with the fuel supplier about an upgrade for GB but no promises. And I'm paying no attention to the weather forecasts.

I'm bringing healthy realism to our McHonda inspired team name thank you very much.

Granted I'm Honda but I have been assured our Spec-182845 unit will deliver from this weekend onwards. Hopefully.

If not we'll just run re-badged mcdo picks post summer and we'll be sweet, don't sweat it.

An unpredictable result means that just three of the sixteen participants left in the Knockout Cup (spare a thought for Bentrovato, who was one race too late with a Perfect Podium having been eliminated in the Qualification Round) actually managed to score in Austria. That leaves us with five matches deadlocked at 0-0:

TheDamus 0 vs. 0 Fountoukos13
Icemanjee1 0 vs. 0 Remmirath
Black_Flag_11 0 vs. 0 Lotus49
Herb 8 vs. 0 Jenson's Understeer
TypingChicane 0 vs. 0 Ruste13
mcdo 8 vs. 0 theferret
Mayhem 0 vs. 0 cm97
Exediron 0 vs. 5 Jezza13

Herb and mcdo have both put their unfortunate (sigh) opponents on the back foot, with Jenson's Understeer and theferret both needing a good score this weekend to avoid leaving themselves a mountain to climb in Hungary. Jezza13 has also started strongly against Exediron. With nobody else scoring, a lot of the matches have been reduced to best-of-two affairs, a scenario that means the higher seed in those five matches could book their place in the Quarter Final if they score a Perfect Podium at Silverstone and their opponent does not register a point. Conversely, it also means that our #1, #2, #3, #5, #7 and #8 seeds could all yet approach the Hungarian Grand Prix on the cusp of being eliminated by a lower seed, should Silverstone not go well for them.
