So I put the top 6 names into a random generator & it selected the podium winners as

1. Ric
2. Vet
3. Rai.

But i've decided to ignore the wisdom of the all powerful, all knowing internet & instead i'm going

1. Vettel
2. Verstappen
3. Ricciardo

So they're ya go. Get your hard earned on Ricciardo to win. He's a cert.

Hmm, nobody at all picking Hamilton to win? Are we really that bold after Hockenheim? :uhoh:

You'd have won the round with this, BTW.

Update coming later tonight (tomorrow morning, for you Euro types). Spoiler alert, but nobody did very well...

HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

With Ferrari looking on strong form lately, and Mercedes having a well-established history of struggling at the Hungaroring in the turbo-hybrid era, confidence was high that it would be a red car atop the podium come Sunday, with a slight chance of a Red Bull stealing the show and claiming victory at a track that should suit them as well as any. In fact, confidence was so high that not a single person picked a Mercedes to win.

That's why nobody scored five points or higher. Hamilton took pole in a rain-soaked qualifying session, with both Ferraris failing to capitalize on their pace to reach the front row. In the race it was more of the same: Ferrari threw away a possible win with a poor pit stop when they couldn't afford anything to go wrong, and Vettel came home in second with Raikkonen behind.

Since nobody foresaw a Hamilton win, the victory in our own little competition was determined by who had Vettel down for second. Congratulations, therefore, to Bentrovato and Lotus49! They say it's better to be lucky than to be good, and since nobody was good this round it counted for double.

(Spare a thought for CarlPotter and Jezza13, both of whom almost predicted something that would have given them the win but backed out)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Place - 3 points
Bentrovato, Lotus49

Second Place - 1 point
Remmirath, Black_Flag_11, CarlPotter

Third Place - 0 points

Individual Standings - Round Twelve

Image

Amazingly, despite Mod Titanium not having scored since France, there is still no change at the top. The winners of this round not only weren't highly enough placed to threaten the leader, they also didn't get very much for their victorious efforts. Bentrovato and Lotus49 each move forward two places as a result of their victories, ending up in 12th and 18th places, respectively.

CarlPotter, Black_Flag_11 and Remmirath all scored a point but did not change their position (although in the case of CarlPotter, he would have lost a position if he had not scored).

Team Standings - Round Twelve

Image

It's a much-needed win for Lotus-CC Racing, although true to their luck this season that win does come at the lowest-scoring round yet (the winner also received only three points for China, but in that case some teams scored with both drivers). The last-placed team of 2018 gains slightly on the pack ahead, but fails to improve their position; ahead of them, Drive Sauber also inches forward with a single point this round.

The only actual change of place this round occurs higher up the table, with The Also Rans sliding past Crisis in Management on the strength of their double scoring - it may have only been one point each, but it was still the only double score of the round.

CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE

Shockingly stagnant heading into the summer break.

Okay, that does it for Hungary! It's almost a month until the F1 season resumes at Spa, so we have some time to sit and think about how it's all gone so horribly wrong.

I'll be putting together a sort of mid-season report some time in the coming weeks, comparing scoring and form this year to previous seasons. I can already tell you that this is the lowest scoring season since I've been curating the competition: nothing seems to go as expected, and as a result nobody has been able to put a sizable lead together.

While that's frustrating for the people who feel like they've been getting it right and getting no points in return, it does mean that the competition is wide open heading into the second half! :]

I clearly actually never did this. Sorry! :uhoh:

The short version is that this year's individual leader - on 36 points - would have been in 10th place going into the summer break last year. This year's leading team - on 63 points - would have been second to last. Scoring is down roughly 25% this year.

Hey Exediron, I seem to be missing one point from my grand total. I’m guessing it was from Germany.

Since those picks wouldn't have scored points anyway it becomes a moot point, fortunately. I never like having to disallow people's picks.

Several people did take Max for third, but none of them had Vettel / Hamilton for 1st and second, so indeed, no Perfect Podium this time out. Update coming later today!

BELGIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

It was chaos at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix; in an incident strongly reminiscent of 2012, Nico Hulkenberg completely misjudged his braking point and plowed into the back of Fernando Alonso's car, sending it flying across the top of Charles Leclerc's halo and probably giving the rookie driver the scare of his young career. Elsewhere on the track, overshadowed by the more dramatic incident taking place behind them, Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo came together, a minor contact that would end in a DNF for the Finn and would contribute to the Aussie going multiple laps down and eventually retiring. With all four of my favorite drivers effectively out of the race, it was certainly a grim first lap for me personally. x(

But in terms of the Top Three Championship, two important things happened on the first lap. The first and most important was that Sebastian Vettel passed Lewis Hamilton for the lead, an advantage he looked likely to carry to the end. The other important even was the delamination of Kimi's rear tyre, robbing him of a likely podium and no fewer than 10 of of a possible Perfect Podium haul of points.

Max Verstappen claimed third from the carnage, but with no overlap between those who had tapped Max to take the podium and those who had correctly called the order between the four-time champs, no Perfect Podiums were forthcoming. The winners, therefore, were all of those who has Sebastian in first and Lewis second. Congratulations, Espo, Mod Onyx, robins13, cm97, Mod Titanium, Exediron, Bentrovato, Jenson's Understeer, Mayhem and Mod Blue!

Individual Standings - Round Thirteen

Image

Championship leader Mod Titanium finally scores again for the first time since France, having amazingly somehow held onto the lead the entire time despite posting four duck eggs in the scoring line. Behind the leader, cm97 slows into second, his lost point from Germany making the difference to put him ahead of the battling pair behind. It's robins13 currently ahead of Jezza13 in the 'Duel of the 13s', with the two equal on points but the 2016 champion having more wins to his name.

Speaking of tiebreakers, Mod Onyx moves ahead of Remmirath for 5th position by virtue of having more wins. Remmirath is currently extending an impressive point-scoring streak running all the way back to Monaco, but only two of those eight scores are wins. Behind them, a domino effect is caused by Icemanjee1's slide from 7th all the way down to 13th, a no-score proving very costly in the tight midfield. As the whole pack moves past him, Bentrovato and CarlPotter exchange places, with Exediron getting past CarlPotter as well on tiebreakers. Icemanjee1 ends up right ahead of Mod Blue, who has jumped over Herb and Black_Flag_11 this round.

In the lower end of the field there are no changes for position, although coulthard's chin has moved a little bit closer to the midfield with a podium place this round.

Team Standings - Round Thirteen

In the team standings, it's Sand Bag'n capitalizing on Icemanjee1's failure to score, reclaiming first position with a team win (shared with No Limit Excedrin Racing and Crisis in Management). Bwoah Steering Wheel only loses a single position, as cm97 picks up an individual win (shared with many others).

In third place - only 2 points back - is No Limit Excedrin Racing, the 2015 team champions enjoying a strong mid-season resurgence that now sees them firmly in the title hunt. With neither driver higher than 8th in the individual standings, consistency and experience is key to their recent form.

Immediately behind NLER is another title-winning outfit, the reigning champions Jalopy Racing. They are joined by Crisis in Management, the three teams separated by only 3 points in this incredibly tight upper-midfield battle. From there it's a little bit of a gap down to The Also Rans, who have Management in Crisis and Drive Sauber for company, both teams continuing to suffer from highly lopsided scoring: Remmirath and Mod Titanium are both outscoring their teammate by better than two to one.

At the back, it's still Lotus-CC Racing. The struggling team has managed to roughly keep pace with the pack ahead, but hasn't gained any ground. They remain over a Perfect Podium behind.

CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE

Mod Titanium has held the lead since Monaco, a total of 8 out of 13 rounds (and was, of course, tied for the lead after the first round). In this super low scoring season, his ability to put in timely scores and not give away points in high-scoring rounds has been key to keeping the lead. Without a misstep, the chasing pack will have to take some risks if they want to get by.

For the teams, Bwoah Steering Wheel's two-race stint at the top is over. Sand Bag'n regains the lead, and has now led the table or been tied for the lead in 10 out of 13 rounds. With robins13 and Mayhem both in the top seven individually, this veteran team shows no signs of slowing down.

NEXT RACE

Monza is up next in only a week's time, and after the strong showing by Ferrari on the straights of Spa there will be many tipping them to claim glory on home ground. This promises to be a hero/zero sort of round, with a high possibility of a Perfect Podium surfacing. Not getting it wrong may be more important than getting it right, but in that caution lies a possibility for someone to take a risk and win big...

Kimi to win in front of the Tifosi at long last? :]

Great write up Exediron! The Maldonado picture made me chuckle

Interesting battle as we wrap up the Europeans leg. It’s close... but it’s not. A lot of us are one perfect podium away from first or one bad weekend can end our season early.
