Round 1: Melbourne, Australia

The start of the race saw pole man Hamilton lead from Raikkonen and Vettel as they lined up on the grid but Verstappen lost a place to Magnussen for 4th place, Verstappen got increasingly frustrated behind Magnussen causing him to spin an lose a couple of places.

Raikkonen pitted from second place causing race leader Hamilton to pit in response while Vettel stayed out the tactic as we were to see later was to hope for a VSC were Vettel could save time in the pits and possibly win the race. This indeed happened as both Haas cars retired after their pitstops after incorrectly fitting the left rear wheels, the second of which Grosjean parked in a position which brought out the VSC.

Vettel pitted and then came out of the pits just in front of Hamilton, Alonso also benefited from stopping jumping a couple of places into 5th place, this is how the race finished with Vettel winning from Hamilton with Raikkonen finishing in third.

In third place with 149 points and receiving the "Racey Raikkonen Trophy"

The first tactical play of the season backfired on Exediron, he would have finished second with 153 points but instead finished last with 101 points.

 In theory it was a good move but the wheel nut issue was unforeseeable.

12th place is a decent start, nothing won but nothing lost either.

Yeah which happened to both Haas cars which he picked, still I don't believe he would have got near 153 points bearing in mind the 18 point penalty as well?

That's one of the things about this competition that frustrates me. The first set of picks were worse - I was going on the assumption that Red Bull would be faster than Ferrari, I had a Mercedes 1-2, and I thought McLaren would be faster than Haas. In terms of actually predicting the competitive order of the teams, they were a dud. But they would have got me second, while a revised set with Ferrari above RBR and Haas at the top of the midfield would have got me a lot less even before the penalty.

It just sometimes feels like you get rewarded a lot more for getting lucky than actually correctly reading the pecking order.

That's not the point of the competition though, it's far easier to make predictions after you seen all the 3 practice sessions and sifted through all the race sims.

Since it didn't work anyway, is it really any easier? You can have all the data, and other people will outscore you by arriving at the right conclusion for the wrong reasons.

The skill is in the prediction, not seeing who's actually the fastest then making the prediction, it enabled you to make a better informed prediction but this time you got unlucky and when you get unlucky then the penalty points hit hard and that's the deterrent.

I probably won't  but here goes anyway:

BAHRAIN

1 HAM
2 VET
3 RAI
4 BOT
5 RIC
6 VER
7 MAG
8 HUL
9 SAI
10 ALO

I think these longer straights will hurt McLaren, but we'll see...

Predictably average!

1. Hamilton
2. Vettel
3. Bottas
4. Raikkonen
5. Verstappen
6. Ricciardo
7. Grosjean
8. Magnussen
9. Hulkenberg
10. Alonso

I fancy this to be quite a boom or bust race as I think most predictions are going to be the big six, both Haas drivers, then two from Hulkenberg/Sainz/Alonso and maybe Vandoorne.

Bahrain:

1. Hamilton
2. Vettel
3. Bottas
4. Verstappen
5. Raikkonen
6. Ricciardo
7. Grosjean
8. Magnussen
9. Hulkenberg
10. Alonso

Deja vu, there is a slight alteration so maybe not? :)

Completely forgot I'd already put in a prediction but apparently I'm really, really confident in positions 1 to 3 and 6 to 10

Let's go with my original prediction (with Kimi in 4th and Max in 5th) and ignore the new one.
