Round 11: Hockenheim, Germany

The start of the race saw pole man Vettel lead from Bottas, Raikkonen and Verstappen as per their grid positions, Vettel soon pulled a small gap in the lead but apart from that the positions were very much stabalised, more interest was further back with Hamilton starting 14th and Ricciardo 19th. Hamilton made good progress on his harder soft tyres gradually moving up to 5th place but Ricciardo was finding progress much harder on the even harder medium tyres.

Whilst the leaders were trying to eke out their first stints on the ultra tyres mindful of the imminent rain forecast, Hamilton was able to push on, on his soft tyres and was catching the leaders. This forced Raikkonen into an early pit stop, wanting to undercut Bottas but also needing to come out of the pits in front of Hamilton.

Vettel pitted later also needing to come out of the pits in front of Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen stopped out a bit later still and both rejoined behind Hamilton.

This left Raikkonen in the lead in front of Vettel and holding him up, Raikkonen seemingly on a 2 stop race to Vettel's one stop race, Vettel was concerned that his tyres were suffering and he should be let by so Ferrari gave the order for Vettel to take the lead.

Meanwhile Hamilton let his teammate Bottas by for third place on his fresher tyres and as the rain was imminent they pitted Hamilton for the softer tyres confident the track wouldn't be wet enough for wet tyres. This worked as Hamilton rejoined in 5th place the rain came and Hamilton was much faster than the leaders.

Verstappen pitted for intermediate tyres moving Hamilton up to 4th whilst Bottas passed Raikkonen for second place on the slippery track, at this point Hamilton was only a few seconds behind the two drivers and much quicker but soon after Vettel locked up and ran off the track into a barrier ending his race, this brought out the safety car.

Bottas, Raikkonen and Verstappen pitted for the better ultra tyres whilst Hamilton already on ultra tyres stayed out putting him in the lead of the race from Bottas, Raikkonen and Verstappen. At the SC restart Hamilton cam under immediate pressure from Bottas having to defend his position over several corner on his older tyres which were slower to heat up. Just as it seemed Hamilton had sucessful held over Bottas an order came out to Bottas to hold position and the race ended with Hamilton winning from Bottas, Raikkonen and Verstappen.

How I got a top ten out of that steaming pile is a mystery to me. Yet more proof that my results this year have no connection to how well I actually predicted the pecking order.
